Bette Midler has said she read an early Hocus Pocus 3 script and thought much of it was “brilliant.” That is encouraging, but it is not confirmation that the script is final or that filming is scheduled. As of the latest reports cited here, Disney had the film in early development, the Sanderson Sisters’ actors were reported to return, and no release date or production start had been announced.
What did Bette Midler say about the Hocus Pocus 3 script?
On Watch What Happens Live, Midler said the team had sent her a script and that “a lot of it was brilliant.” She added that they were trying to work out “what it is and where it’s going to be and how much it’s going to cost and all those logistical things,” according to Variety’s October 19, 2025 report.

Her comments establish that she had read a draft and liked much of it. They do not establish that the screenplay was finished, that a production schedule existed, or that a release plan had been settled. Midler had said in July 2024 that she had not yet seen a script, making her 2025 remarks a later development rather than evidence that the film had already entered production.
Is Hocus Pocus 3 officially happening?
Variety reported on May 7, 2026 that the third film was officially in the works at Disney, while describing it as being in early development. The report said Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy were set to return as Winifred, Sarah, and Mary—the Sanderson Sisters. These are reported cast plans, not confirmation that filming dates have been set.

The same report said a theatrical release was being considered in response to audience interest. That is not a confirmed release format; the available reporting does not establish a finalized distribution plan.
What is known about the cast and timing?

Taken together, the May and July reports point to a project in development with the original trio reported to return, but without confirmed production dates. The sources cited here do not provide a filming start or a release date.
When will Hocus Pocus 3 come out?
No release date is established in the reports cited here. A theatrical release was only under consideration in the May 2026 report, and Najimy’s July interview said she did not know when the film might move forward. Treat any specific date or window as unconfirmed unless Disney announces it.

How does the sequel fit into the story so far?
For a franchise rewatch, Disney says Hocus Pocus 2 debuted exclusively on Disney+ on September 30, 2022. Its official announcement identifies Midler as Winifred, Najimy as Mary, and Parker as Sarah; it also names Anne Fletcher as director and Jen D’Angelo as writer of the sequel. Variety reported in 2026 that Nielsen attributed 2.7 billion minutes viewed to the sequel’s opening weekend. Variety separately said Disney+ called it the service’s most-watched original film over its first three days. The minutes figure is for the opening weekend and should not be conflated with the separate three-day description—or treated as evidence of how a third film will perform.
