The change began at Elimination Chamber, continued through his WrestleMania 41 title win, and was reversed before SummerSlam. Cena’s final match came later that year: Gunther defeated him by submission at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.
What does a heel turn mean in WWE?
A “heel” is a villain or antagonist in professional wrestling storytelling; a “face” is the heroic or audience-favored character. Cena’s turn described his on-screen role and actions, not a claim about his real-world personality.
For years, Cena was identified with WWE’s heroic image. In 2025, WWE’s account says he aligned with The Rock at Elimination Chamber and berated the WWE Universe. That reversal set his familiar public image against his new antagonistic behavior. WWE’s profile of Cena recounts the turn and its later reversal.
Why did John Cena turn heel?
WWE’s published account documents what happened in the storyline, but does not give a definitive explanation of the creative team’s motive for choosing the turn. It is therefore safer to describe its effect than to present a behind-the-scenes reason as fact: the heel role introduced an unexpected conflict into a farewell year built around the legacy of a long-time hero.

How did the heel run fit into Cena’s farewell year?
Elimination Chamber: the alignment
At Elimination Chamber 2025, Cena aligned with The Rock and turned against the audience, according to WWE. The moment established the antagonistic phase of the story.
WrestleMania 41: a title win as a heel
At WrestleMania 41, Cena won his 17th world title with help from Travis Scott, WWE says. The win advanced the heel storyline rather than ending it.

Before SummerSlam: the reversal
WWE says Cody Rhodes helped Cena realize his error and that Cena corrected his ways before SummerSlam 2025. The turn was therefore a chapter in the farewell year, not a role he maintained through his final match.
When was Cena’s final match, and who won?
WWE announced on September 30, 2025, that Cena’s final match would headline Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., following a year-long farewell tour. WWE’s December 5 preview named Gunther as his opponent after Gunther won the Last Time is Now tournament. WWE’s announcement and event preview establish the schedule and opponent.

Gunther won the December 13 match by submission. WWE’s event results say Cena continued fighting before tapping to Gunther’s Sleeper Hold. Afterward, the crowd gave Cena a standing ovation and chanted “Thank You Cena.” WWE says he retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025.

The turn put Cena’s established hero legacy in direct tension with his farewell-year conduct. That made the opening stretch less like a straightforward celebration and more like a story about a beloved figure acting against the audience’s expectations. That is an interpretation of the storyline’s structure, not a motive WWE has publicly confirmed.

The later return toward Cena’s familiar heroic presentation also matters: the heel phase did not define the whole tour. The final match and post-match tribute closed the year on a different note from the antagonism that began it.
