Luke Wilson plays Matthew Van Weyden, Isabelle Fuhrman plays Diamond, and Ella Hunt is also among the cast. Costner’s director’s statement traces the project back to 1988 and describes its development into a four-film saga.
What is Horizon: An American Saga about?
The film follows the changing fortunes of a river settlement in nineteenth-century New Mexico Territory. Its story brings together settlers and soldiers, rail magnates and cattle traders, Indigenous Americans, and Chinese migrant workers—communities whose interests sometimes intersect and sometimes collide as the country expands. The Venice Biennale describes the settlement’s story as one of birth, death, and rebirth.
That broad, interwoven scope is central to the film’s premise: rather than focus on one hero’s journey, Chapter 1 sets a frontier community within a larger story of migration and competing lives. In Costner’s director’s statement, “At the heart of the saga is the story of the great migration across America.”

Why is it described as Kevin Costner’s passion project?
Costner’s director’s statement says the idea began in 1988. After Open Range in 2003, he pursued getting it into production; over the following two decades, the project developed into a four-film saga. Costner describes its central subject as migration across America and the struggles, determination, and perseverance of early settlers. The phrase “passion project” captures that long development, but it is a characterization, not a quotation from the statement.
How long is the film, and when was it made?
Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 runs 181 minutes according to both the Festival de Cannes and La Biennale di Venezia. Cannes lists 2023 as the production year and 2024 as the film year, so those dates refer to different details rather than a contradiction. Venice identifies it as an English-language U.S. film and lists it out of competition.

Where can you watch Chapter 1?
Warner Bros. Discovery announced on August 16, 2024 that Chapter 1 would begin streaming exclusively on Max in the United States on August 23, 2024. That announcement establishes a U.S. debut date in 2024, not the film’s current availability in every country. Check the Max catalogue or local listings for your territory before planning to watch; the cited festival and studio records do not establish present-day regional availability or a current physical-media edition.
