Oscar Isaac plays Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi plays the Creature, and Mia Goth plays two characters: Elizabeth Lavenza and Claire Frankenstein. Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 film also follows Victor’s younger brother William and frames the story through a captain’s encounter with Victor in the Arctic.
Who plays Victor Frankenstein and the Creature?
- Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein: A brilliant, egotistical scientist whose experiments make him an outcast in academia. Del Toro and Isaac give Victor a bohemian, rock-star quality. Isaac says Victor imagines entering the laboratory “like a stage, not as a lab.”
- Jacob Elordi as the Creature: Victor’s creation, assembled from battlefield body parts, develops a consciousness of his own rather than simply following his maker’s wishes. Netflix Tudum calls him “the Creature”; “Frankenstein’s monster” is a familiar search phrase for the same character.
These are the film’s character choices, not a universal account of every adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel. Netflix Tudum’s cast guide describes the roles and performances.

Does Mia Goth play two characters?
Yes. Mia Goth plays both Elizabeth Lavenza and Claire Frankenstein, Victor and William’s mother. Elizabeth is engaged to William and becomes drawn to the Creature. Claire’s death profoundly affects the family. The dual role means Goth appears as characters with different relationships to Victor and the Creature, rather than as one character under two names.
Who are the other Frankenstein family members?
- Felix Kammerer as William Frankenstein: Victor’s younger brother and the family’s favored “golden child.” The brothers reunite as adults, when William is engaged to Elizabeth.
- Christian Convery as Victor Frankenstein at age 10: The film’s younger Victor is troubled and grows up with an abusive father and an absent mother.
- Charles Dance as Leopold Frankenstein: The cold, controlling father of Victor and William.
Who funds Victor’s experiments?
Christoph Waltz plays Heinrich Harlander, a wealthy patron of the arts who deals arms during the Crimean War. He funds Victor’s experiments for reasons of his own, making him more than a simple benefactor.

- Lending his burlesque touch to 1970s genre revision, Mel Brooks followed his hit "western" Blazing Saddles with this parody of 1930s Universal horror movies. Determined to live down his family's reputation, Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (co-screenwriter Gene Wilder) insists on pronouncing his name "Fronckensteen" and denies interest in replicating his grandfather's experiments. But when he is lured b
Who is Captain Anderson, and how does the film begin?
Lars Mikkelsen plays Captain Anderson, a ship captain stranded in the Arctic. He encounters a frostbitten Victor and hears his story. The framing gives the film an icebound opening before it moves into the accounts of Victor and the Creature.
Who does David Bradley play?
David Bradley plays the Blind Man, an elderly man whom the Creature encounters while wandering.
How the film’s structure relates to Mary Shelley’s novel
Netflix describes del Toro’s film as inspired by Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel. It is organized as an icebound “Prelude,” followed by “Victor’s Tale” and “The Creature’s Tale.” That framing echoes the novel’s opening through a ship captain before turning to Victor and his creation, while remaining del Toro’s own adaptation. Del Toro has said, “I’ve lived with Mary Shelley’s creation all my life,” and that he wanted “to make it my own, to sing it back in a different key with a different emotion.” Tudum’s adaptation overview explains the film’s structure and its connection to the novel.
