In “Phantasm Forgiveness,” Truman Capote visits Babe Paley’s grave, returns to drinking after a period of sobriety, and imagines making amends to the surviving Swans through Answered Prayers. The reconciliation scenes are fantasies, not evidence that Capote repaired those relationships in real life. The finale ends with his death, leaving regret and the breach of trust unresolved.
What happens in the finale?
After the previous episode depicts Babe Paley’s death, Capote visits her grave and speaks to her. Babe is no longer part of his living present, but the graveyard scene and his thoughts make her the emotional center of the finale.
Capote later visits Jack Dunphy and says he plans to finish Answered Prayers as an apology to the Swans. In the writing fantasies, his fictional alter ego, P.B. Jones, meets imagined versions of C.Z. Guest, Slim Keith, and Lee Radziwill. Each encounter offers a form of repair: recognition and freedom, an outlet for anger, or the chance to tell her own story. The episode then closes with Capote’s death.
What does “Phantasm Forgiveness” mean?
The title points to forgiveness pursued in Capote’s imagination. His fantasies let him picture acknowledging the women’s inner lives rather than exposing them, and receiving a response that might ease the harm he caused. But the scenes are subjective, dreamlike possibilities—not literal events or proof that the Swans forgave him.

The distinction matters because the finale places those imagined moments beside a darker present. Capote’s regret cannot undo the publication of intimate material or restore the trust that was lost. Actor Tom Hollander described the character’s ending this way: “Yes, I think it was. I mean, it’s a sad tale. There’s no way around it.” Read Hollander’s comments on the ending.
Did Capote and Babe reconcile?
The finale creates a feeling of tenderness between Capote and Babe, but it does not establish a real-world reconciliation before their deaths. His visit to her grave is an encounter in the episode’s present; the mutual understanding suggested by the scene is the series’ interpretation, not a documented final conversation.

How does the ending compare with the historical story?
The broad premise is rooted in the fallout surrounding Answered Prayers: Capote’s friendships with the New York women he called the Swans fractured after an excerpt from his planned book fictionalized their lives and revealed intimate secrets. FX and ABC describe the limited series as based on Laurence Leamer’s Capote’s Women. See the series description and source-book details.
The episode’s reconciliation scenes, private dialogue, and inferred motives are dramatization. That caution applies to the series more broadly: some personal allegations are uncertain or unsupported. For instance, TV Insider reports no proven record of an affair between Slim Keith and Bill Paley, despite the show’s implication. Read TV Insider’s account of fact versus fiction. Treat the finale’s fantasies as a way of expressing Capote’s regret, not as historical documentation.

Laurence Leamer’s nonfiction book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era is the source book named by FX and ABC. It offers a nonfiction account to read alongside the scripted adaptation, but the two are not interchangeable records of events. Find the official series and source-book information.
