Paul Atreides wins the throne, but his victory begins a war rather than ending one. After defeating Feyd-Rautha, he claims the Emperor’s position through his proposed marriage to Princess Irulan and orders the Fremen to attack the Great Houses. Chani leaves him, rejecting the messianic role he has embraced and the violence it unleashes.
What happens to Paul at the end of Dune: Part Two?
Paul defeats Feyd-Rautha in single combat. He then turns the Emperor’s defeat into a claim on imperial power: by announcing that he intends to marry Princess Irulan, he positions himself to take the throne. The victory is not a peaceful restoration of House Atreides. When the Great Houses refuse to accept Paul’s claim, he sends the Fremen into a wider war.
That outcome makes the ending both a triumph and a catastrophe in motion. Paul has gained political authority and the loyalty of an army, but his actions ignite the conflict he had been trying to avert. Warner Bros.’ official film description frames his struggle as a choice between his relationship with Chani and the fate of the known universe, against the terrible future he can foresee.
Why does Chani leave Paul?
Chani’s departure is more than a reaction to Paul’s plan to marry Irulan. Throughout the film, she questions the belief that an outsider is destined to save the Fremen. Paul’s decision to use that belief as a source of political power—and to unleash violence in its name—puts him on the side of the prophecy she has resisted. She leaves because she sees what his victory means, not simply because of a romantic slight.
#1 Best Overall
The final focus on Chani shifts the emotional weight away from Paul’s rise. He may be taking the throne, but the film ends with the person closest to him choosing not to follow. TIME’s account of the ending reports Chani’s departure and describes director Denis Villeneuve’s intent to give her convictions and an agenda of her own. Zendaya also contrasted the film’s more questioning Chani with the character in Frank Herbert’s novel.
What does the ending set up?
A war beyond Arrakis
The Great Houses’ refusal to recognize Paul’s claim turns his ascension into the starting point for a wider Fremen campaign. The film shows the order and the conflict beginning; it does not resolve how the war will unfold.

Paul’s dangerous new rule
Paul has secured a path to imperial power, but the ending presents that power as morally and politically unsettled. His followers’ victory gives him the reach to unleash the future he feared. The result is not a simple heroic reward: his rule begins with a war and the loss of Chani’s trust.
A broken relationship
Chani’s departure leaves the personal cost of Paul’s choices unresolved. Her skepticism is an independent response to his actions, not merely a plot obstacle to his political success.

- Denis Villeneuve returns to direct this second instalment of the adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi novel.
How does the film differ from the novel?
The film makes Chani’s resistance to Paul’s messianic status and her final departure especially explicit. TIME reports that Villeneuve wanted Chani and Jessica to have more presence and their own agendas; the film gives Chani a sharper role as a critic of the prophecy. That emphasis makes the breakup a clear counterpoint to Paul’s political ascent.
Villeneuve has described adaptation as requiring choices and changes to make a story work in film form. The Associated Press reports that explanation in its interview with the filmmaker. It is useful to distinguish the novel’s broad political outcome from the film’s emphatic final separation rather than assuming every character beat is identical.

What should you read after the film?
Dune Messiah is the direct literary sequel to Dune and continues Paul’s story beyond the first novel. It is the closest book to turn to if you want to follow the direction suggested by the film’s ending. Readers interested instead in how the movies reshape the source material can revisit Herbert’s Dune and compare its characterization with the film.
Villeneuve’s stated plan at the time was to make a third film based on Dune Messiah; TIME reported his remark, “Dune Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me.” That establishes the literary direction he described, not a guarantee that a future film will reproduce every event or character beat from the novel. TIME’s coverage of the book and sequel context identifies Dune Messiah as the next novel in Herbert’s sequence.
