Damsel is a 2024 Netflix fantasy adventure built around a sharp reversal: Millie Bobby Brown’s Elodie is betrayed into a dragon’s lair and has to save herself. That premise makes the film worth discussing, but it does not prove that it is the only Netflix original movie that matters. The more persuasive case is narrower: Damsel puts female agency at the center of familiar fairy-tale machinery, then asks whether survival can carry a story usually organized around rescue.
What is Damsel about?
Elodie agrees to marry a prince, only to learn that his royal family has chosen her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her own judgment and determination to survive. Netflix describes the film as a fantasy/action-adventure; its US title page lists it as PG-13. Netflix’s US title page has the current listing, though ratings and catalog details can differ by region.
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed the film, and Netflix Tudum credits Dan Mazeau as its scriptwriter. The cast includes Brown, Ray Winstone, Robin Wright, Angela Bassett, Nick Robinson, and Shohreh Aghdashloo. Netflix Tudum’s film feature gives the expanded premise and production context.
Why the survival story is the film’s central idea
The familiar fairy-tale pattern promises that danger will be followed by rescue. Damsel changes the point of view: Elodie is not waiting for a prince to solve the problem that the royal family created. Brown summarized the character to Netflix this way: “She’s a damsel who doesn’t need to be saved,” she said. “She saves herself in many ways. It subverts what you expect: You’re expecting the prince to turn around and save her, and… no. Don’t wait for the prince.”

That is a statement of intent, not a verdict on how fully the film realizes it. The premise gives the heroine the work of surviving rather than making her a prize in someone else’s quest. Fresnadillo described his approach as turning “a fantasy adventure and a princess and dragon story” into something “completely upside down.” The film’s distinctive proposition, then, is less that it discards fairy tales than that it uses their recognizable setup to foreground a heroine’s choices.
What the performances and production add
Robin Wright plays Queen Isabelle, the royal figure who conceals betrayal behind charm. Wright told Netflix that Isabelle can “appear charming to lure the victims in,” making her chosen sacrifice feel privileged before “her barbs come out.” That description frames the courtly welcome as part of the threat: Elodie’s danger begins before she reaches the dragon.

Brown also did some of her own stunt work. Netflix Tudum’s behind-the-scenes account describes “quite a bit” of it, including a wire-assisted lift against a practically built cliff face and sword work. That supports saying she performed some stunts; it does not establish that she did them all.
Is Damsel the only Netflix original movie that matters?
As a provocative opinion, the title can be read as an invitation to make a case for Damsel. As a factual claim, “the only” is not established. Netflix’s official listing and Tudum’s feature explain the film and its creators’ aims, but they do not compare it with other Netflix originals on critical reception, audience response, viewing figures, originality, or cultural impact. No comparable ranking or film-specific viewing statistic is established by those sources.

A defensible argument is that Damsel matters for the particular question it puts at the heart of its story: what happens when the supposed damsel becomes the person responsible for getting herself out? Calling it the platform’s uniquely important or best film would require separate, dated evidence and a clear measure for comparison. The available material supports the narrower claim about its premise, not that broader ranking.
