Cabrini is an earnest, large-scale biographical drama about faith put to work: organizing care for immigrant children, confronting political resistance and building institutions. Cristiana Dell’Anna anchors the film as Francesca Cabrini, while director Alejandro Monteverde gives her mission an emphatically inspirational shape. It is a fit for viewers drawn to religious biographies and stories of women’s public leadership; those seeking a nuanced historical investigation may find the film’s approach more heroic than probing.
What is Cabrini about?
Released theatrically on March 8, 2024, Cabrini is a biographical drama directed by Alejandro Monteverde. Angel Studios’ synopsis places Francesca Cabrini, played by Cristiana Dell’Anna, in New York City in 1889, where she confronts disease, poverty and hostility as she seeks housing and healthcare for vulnerable children. The supporting cast includes David Morse, John Lithgow, Giancarlo Giannini, Patch Darragh and Romana Maggiora Vergano. Angel Studios describes the film as the story of an Italian immigrant campaigning to persuade a hostile mayor to help society’s most vulnerable.

The film’s central interest is not simply Cabrini’s personal conviction, but how she turns it into collective action. Her religious vocation is presented as a basis for organizing, advocacy and institution-building. That framing gives the story a clear emotional through-line: a woman repeatedly told that her ambitions are too large presses on anyway.
How does the film portray women’s leadership and faith?
Cabrini treats leadership as practical work—negotiating with officials, rallying allies and pursuing durable services for children. Its portrayal of a woman building influence within a religious vocation is a strong reason to watch, especially for viewers interested in women’s agency beyond individual achievement. The story also links faith to public responsibility: belief is expressed through care and persistence, not confined to private reflection.

That clarity comes with a trade-off. The film leans into Cabrini’s heroic resolve and inspirational uplift, leaving less room for ambiguity or sustained examination of the institutions and social conditions surrounding her mission. Whether that feels moving or overly emphatic will depend on how much complexity a viewer expects from a faith-based biopic.
Is Cabrini historically accurate?
Cabrini is a dramatized biographical film, not a scene-by-scene historical record. Angel Studios’ official press materials say Cabrini was born in northern Italy in 1850, traveled to New York in 1889 with six Missionary Sisters, became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1909 and was canonized in 1946. The same materials state that she established 67 hospitals, orphanages and schools over 34 years. Those details are Angel’s published biographical claims; they are not an independent verification of every event or statistic depicted in the film. Angel’s press page also presents the movie as based on Cabrini’s fight for immigrant orphans.
Rank #2
The Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus describe the New York mission as providing housing, education and healthcare for hundreds of orphaned children in their March 7, 2024 newsletter. That account offers an organizational perspective on the subject and the film’s release framing. The available material does not establish which scenes were fictionalized or provide a comprehensive check against primary records, so viewers should not treat the drama as a complete historical audit.
What did critics and audiences think?
On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 91% Tomatometer from 89 reviews and a 98% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 verified ratings. These are snapshots that can change, not permanent measures of quality. The site’s critics consensus calls the film “an uplifting biopic with a timeless message,” aided by Dell’Anna’s performance. Responses were not uniform: TheWrap’s Zofia Wijaszka said it “falls short of leaving a lasting impression,” while FilmWeek/LAist critic Tim Cogshell called it “A pretty faithful biography of Cabrini.” The figures and excerpts appear on Rotten Tomatoes’ film page; the scores offer context, but the film’s earnest tone is more useful to a viewer’s decision than any aggregate percentage.

Is Cabrini appropriate for teens?
Angel rates the film PG-13 for thematic material, some violence, language and smoking. Its FAQ notes that much of the dialogue is in Italian, with English subtitles for Italian-language scenes. That guidance can help families decide whether the content and reading demands suit a particular teenager, but it is not a guarantee of age suitability.
