Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to return as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell in a new Mummy film. September 2026 reports say production has begun and the movie is now scheduled for October 15, 2027, replacing its original May 19, 2028 date. The story remains under wraps.
Are Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning for The Mummy 4?
Yes. Universal announced in February 2026 that Fraser and Weisz would reprise Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. They were first reported to be in talks in November 2025, when Universal had not yet commented. The earlier “in talks” wording is now outdated: their return has been confirmed.

The pair last appeared together in The Mummy Returns (2001). Fraser also starred in 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but Weisz did not return for that film. The “24 years” framing refers to the gap since the actors’ last shared Mummy film, not to Fraser’s last appearance in the franchise.
Has filming started, and when will the new Mummy movie come out?
LOS40 and GamesRadar+ reported in September 2026 that filming had begun. Those outlets report that the release date has moved to October 15, 2027. Universal’s February announcement had set May 19, 2028, so the later date supersedes the original schedule.

The October 15, 2027 date is the latest reported date, rather than a date independently listed with production details on Universal’s upcoming-movies page.
Who is making the film?
- Directors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as the filmmaking team Radio Silence.
- Screenwriter: David Coggeshall.
- Returning leads: Fraser as Rick O’Connell and Weisz as Evelyn O’Connell.
September coverage also reports that John Hannah, Kevin J. O’Connor and Oded Fehr are returning. The full final cast has not been disclosed in the sources reporting the project.

What is the new Mummy movie about?
Universal has not released plot details. September entertainment coverage describes the film as following The Mummy Returns and not carrying forward the events of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. That continuity description comes from reporting, not an official plot synopsis explaining how the films connect, so the new film’s precise place in the franchise remains to be clarified by the studio or filmmakers.
The 1999 film introduced Fraser as adventurer Rick and Weisz as librarian and Egyptologist Evelyn. Universal’s official synopsis, quoted in TheWrap’s 2026 announcement coverage, calls it “a rousing, suspenseful and horrifying epic about an expedition of treasure-seeking explorers in the Sahara Desert in 1925.” That describes the original film, not the plot or setting of the new one.

How the project moved from talks to production
- November 4, 2025: TheWrap reported Fraser and Weisz were in talks to return. It also named Radio Silence as directors and Coggeshall as screenwriter; Universal had no comment at that point.
- February 10, 2026: TheWrap reported Universal’s announcement that the actors would return as Rick and Evelyn. The announced release date was May 19, 2028.
- September 2026: LOS40 and GamesRadar+ reported that production was underway and the date had shifted to October 15, 2027.
Before Universal confirmed the project, Fraser had described the possibility cautiously. CNA reported him saying, “Hey, anything’s possible at this point. It is speculation, and I would love to tell you…I would love to answer more about that. But my lips are kind of sealed.” That was a comment from the speculation stage, not a current update on filming.
