The available reporting says the motive remains unclear. The clearest fact-check separates what the episode depicts, what testimony supports, and which legal case each outcome belongs to.

These are descriptions of the episode, not a scene-by-scene verification of every historical detail. The recap does not establish the exact wording of every exchange or whether the show compresses the timeline.
Did Aaron Hernandez kill Odin Lloyd because he thought Lloyd was a snitch?
That is the motive the episode presents: Hernandez suspects Lloyd of being a snitch. It should be described as the series’ interpretation, not as a proven account of Hernandez’s private reasoning. TIME’s overview of the series says the motive remains unclear. The cited reporting supports saying that Lloyd was killed and that Hernandez was convicted in the case; it does not establish the show’s explanation for why.

Did Shayanna Jenkins know what was in the box?
According to the Globe recap, Jenkins testified at Hernandez’s murder trial that she was not told what the box contained and did not look inside. She said she put the box and some clothes in a garbage bag and left it in a dumpster, the location of which she could not recall. The episode’s box scene should not be presented as proof that she knew what was inside.
Which case did Hernandez’s conviction involve?
Hernandez was convicted in Lloyd’s murder. That outcome is separate from the 2012 Boston double-murder case involving Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado: the Globe recap reports that a jury acquitted Hernandez in that case. The two cases should not be conflated, and the acquitted murders should not be described as established acts by Hernandez.

How should viewers assess what the series changes?
American Sports Story is a scripted dramatization based on The Boston Globe and Wondery podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc. FX/ABC and the Associated Press identify that podcast as the series’ source. A source relationship does not make each scene a documentary record: scripted scenes may shape events into a narrative, but the evidence here does not identify which specific lines or moments were invented.
A useful way to assess any disputed scene is to separate four things:

- West Side Story - BD
- Depiction: What the episode shows, as described in the Globe recap.
- Supported record: What trial testimony or reporting says, such as Jenkins’s account of the box.
- Dramatic interpretation: Motive, private knowledge, or dialogue that the episode supplies but the cited reporting does not establish.
- Case outcome: Whether a conviction or acquittal belongs to Lloyd’s case or the separate 2012 case.
The available recap is not a complete transcript or forensic comparison, so it cannot support labeling individual scenes false without evidence tied to those scenes.

In an Associated Press production feature, executive producer Brad Simpson said the team wanted to look beyond a familiar headline and consider the people involved. Actor Josh Andrés Rivera also spoke about the responsibility of portraying Hernandez with sensitivity. Those comments describe production intent; they do not establish that a particular scene is historically exact.
