A 2015 oral history says Mr. T reportedly got cold feet on the day of the first WrestleMania and considered pulling out. Former wrestler Brutus Beefcake recalled that Hulk Hogan had to keep him from leaving. That is a retrospective account—not a verified direct quote from Hogan, or a backstage incident confirmed by a contemporaneous report.
What the account says happened
In CBS Sports’ 2015 oral history of WWE in 1985, Mr. T is described as having “reportedly got cold feet the day of the event and considered pulling out.” Beefcake recalled that Hogan had to handle him carefully and keep him happy so he would not take off and disappear.

The distinction matters: this is a later recollection of backstage tension, not a contemporaneous report. The sources available here do not establish that Hogan himself used the headline’s wording or provide a direct Hogan quotation about Mr. T nearly withdrawing. The careful answer is that Mr. T reportedly considered leaving, according to the oral history’s account of Beefcake’s recollection.
What happened at WrestleMania I
WWE’s official results place the first WrestleMania at Madison Square Garden in New York on March 31, 1985. In the main event, Hulk Hogan and Mr. T teamed up against Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff, with Jimmy Snuka in Hogan and Mr. T’s corner and Cowboy Bob Orton accompanying their opponents. Hogan and Mr. T won.

According to WWE’s main-event recap, Piper and Mr. T exchanged slaps early in the match. Hogan eventually pinned Orndorff after Orton accidentally struck him with his cast. Piper and Orton then turned on Orndorff, who soon became a fan favorite.
Why Mr. T was central to the promotion
Mr. T brought television and film celebrity to an event designed to reach beyond wrestling’s existing audience. A contemporaneous Washington Post report by Paul Attanasio presented the main event as champion Hogan teaming with “none other than Mr. T of ‘The A-Team.’” It also noted Muhammad Ali as guest referee, Liberace as timekeeper and Billy Martin as announcer. Attanasio reported that the event was distributed to hundreds of locations in the United States and two dozen foreign countries.

TIME’s April 15, 1985 feature likewise described Mr. T as Hogan’s Rocky III co-star and covered the celebrity roles and closed-circuit showings. TIME reported distribution in the United States and 26 foreign countries—a slightly different contemporaneous figure from the Washington Post’s account. Both are historical reports, not current distribution information. TIME also described wrestling videocassettes and merchandise planned or on sale at the time; that does not establish whether a particular WrestleMania I DVD is currently available.
