Try candidates seated and standing, and compare their unplugged sound before deciding.
What counts as a thin-body acoustic guitar?
“Thin body” usually refers to the depth of the guitar’s body, not its overall size or scale length. Yamaha positions its APX family as a thinline acoustic-electric series, emphasizing comfort, access to upper frets, and stage use. Its specifications list APX body depth at 80–90 mm (3 1/8–3 9/16 in), with the precise measurement varying across models. Check the specification for the exact APX variant you are considering.
For context, Taylor lists both the 214ce and 314ce Grand Auditorium models at 4 5/8 in deep. Those figures come from the manufacturers’ product pages; they are useful for comparing published dimensions, but they cannot predict whether a guitar will feel comfortable to a particular player.

How to choose the right body depth
Try the guitar in the positions you actually play
Body measurements are a useful first filter, not a comfort guarantee. Try a candidate seated and standing, with your usual strap if possible. Notice whether the lower bout sits naturally against you, whether the body feels intrusive to your picking arm, and whether the guitar stays balanced when you move to the upper frets.
Match the design to amplified use
Yamaha positions the APX around stage use and lists an undersaddle piezo pickup for the APX600 and APX600FM. That makes the series a relevant option if you expect to plug in often. These manufacturer descriptions establish design intent and listed features, not a measured advantage in feedback resistance or amplified sound quality over the Taylor models.

Listen unplugged before trading body depth for handling
The cited product pages do not provide controlled, side-by-side tests of acoustic volume or tone. They therefore do not establish how much, if any, unplugged volume or bass a player should expect to give up with a thinner body. If unplugged projection matters, compare the specific guitars in person at a similar playing level and listen from a few feet away as well as from the player’s position.
Check neck dimensions as well as the body
A slim body does not by itself make a guitar easier to play. The APX600 is listed with a 25-inch scale and 43 mm nut width; Taylor lists the 214ce at 1 11/16 in nut width. If hand feel is a deciding factor, compare string spacing and neck shape in person, and verify the specifications for the exact 314ce variant rather than assuming they match another model.

Compare construction separately from depth
The 214ce combines a solid torrefied spruce top with layered walnut back and sides; Taylor describes the 314ce as all-solid. Those are construction differences, not consequences of body depth. Choose based on the features and feel you value rather than treating a deeper or thinner body as a proxy for quality.
