Their son Paul is therefore both an Atreides by family and a Harkonnen grandson through his mother.
How are the Atreides and Harkonnens related?
The connection runs through Jessica, not through a marriage between the two houses. She is the daughter of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and the mother of Paul and Alia with Duke Leto Atreides. That makes the Baron their maternal grandfather, even though Paul and Alia belong to the Atreides family through Leto and Jessica.
The immediate family tree
- Baron Vladimir Harkonnen is Jessica’s father.
- Lady Jessica is the Baron’s daughter and the partner of Duke Leto Atreides.
- Duke Leto Atreides and Jessica are the parents of Paul and Alia.
- Paul Atreides and Alia are the Baron’s grandchildren through Jessica.
In the novel’s sequence, Alia is born after Leto has died. This detail does not change her parentage: Leto is her father and Jessica her mother.
Why Jessica’s parentage matters
The revelation makes the feud between the Atreides and Harkonnens more intimate than a political rivalry. Paul is raised as an Atreides and is the heir to Leto’s house, yet he is also biologically descended from the Harkonnen line through Jessica. The family connection does not make Paul a Harkonnen in house affiliation; it explains his ancestry.

Jessica’s parentage also intersects with a Bene Gesserit breeding plan. As TIME’s account of the family tree describes it, the plan involved marrying a female Atreides heir to Feyd-Rautha. Jessica instead bore Paul first.
Where Feyd-Rautha fits
Feyd-Rautha is the son of the Baron’s half-brother, making him the Baron’s nephew. The Baron selects Feyd as his heir. He is not Jessica’s child or Paul’s sibling: his place in the family is on the Baron’s side branch, while Paul and Alia descend from the Baron through Jessica.

Novel and film versions differ on the Baron’s death
In Frank Herbert’s Dune, Alia kills Baron Harkonnen. In Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, Paul kills him. The family relationship is the same in both versions, but the character who kills the Baron differs, so the detail should be attributed to the version being discussed.
Which Dune continuity does a family tree follow?
A useful family tree should identify both its source continuity and its scope. TIME’s March 2024 graphic says it is based only on Frank Herbert’s published work. Its article also notes a difference introduced by later prequels: Children of Dune identifies Jessica’s mother as Tanidia Nerus, while Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson’s Prelude trilogy identifies Tanidia Nerus as Gaius Helen Mohiam. The expanded-prequel material has prompted disagreement among fans about canon, so it should not be silently folded into a Frank Herbert-only tree.

For the immediate Dune-era family, the essential relationships are Jessica’s parentage, her children with Leto, and Feyd-Rautha’s place as the Baron’s nephew and chosen heir. A longer genealogy or a screen adaptation may add details, but it should label which books or adaptation it follows.

Frank Herbert’s Dune, first published in 1965, is the source novel for the original family revelation. TIME’s family-tree explainer summarizes the central relationships, while its 2024 article and graphic clarify the novel-versus-film distinction and the scope of the published-work tree.
