Spoilers for The Penguin Season 1, Episode 2, “Inside Man.” Oz and Sofia end the episode with a deal to pursue power together—but it is a tactical alliance built on a secret. Oz knows he killed Alberto; Sofia does not. The events that lead to their partnership leave her with fewer allies and give Oz a route toward Alberto’s Drops operation.
What happens in The Penguin episode 2?
After Alberto Falcone’s death, Sofia tries to keep her family together and find out who is helping the Maronis. Oz, meanwhile, plays both families against each other. He hopes to improve his standing with the Falcones and get closer to Alberto’s Drops shipment, while concealing that he killed Alberto. Apple TV’s episode listing describes the parallel struggle: Sofia works to secure her family’s strength as Oz tries to manipulate the Falcones and Maronis.
Oz’s plan to implicate Johnny Viti fails
Oz tries to make Johnny Viti look like the traitor by having Victor plant diamonds from Alberto’s shipment in Viti’s car. Victor fails to plant them. With that scheme gone, Oz kills the captive Ervad and redirects suspicion toward Castillo, a man Sofia trusts.
Castillo is killed, and Sofia loses an ally
Evidence appears to point to Castillo, and Luca shoots him. The diamonds are later found in Castillo’s apartment, reinforcing the accusation. The result is more than a successful diversion for Oz: Sofia has lost someone she trusted, and her family is increasingly prepared to push her aside. Sky’s episode guide also identifies Sofia Falcone’s comic-book origin context as Batman: The Long Halloween.

Oz uses the grave to intimidate Victor
Oz and Victor dispose of the bodies. To punish Victor for failing the operation, Oz makes him lie in the grave beside the dead men. The gesture is meant to frighten and discipline him, but it also shows the harsh survival logic Oz imposes on the people around him.
Why does Oz frame Castillo?
Oz needs suspicion to land somewhere other than on himself. His first attempt is to implicate Viti, but Victor’s failure to plant the diamonds forces him to improvise. Accusing Castillo redirects Sofia and her family toward a trusted insider, while concealing Oz’s own connection to Alberto’s death. It is a calculated move: the accusation helps Oz keep maneuvering between the families, but it costs Sofia an ally and makes her more vulnerable inside her own family.

Why does Sofia team up with Oz?
At the crematorium, Sofia proposes that they work together to take control. She needs leverage in a family that discounts her; Oz wants access to Alberto’s drug operation and a stronger position in the power struggle. Their goals overlap, so each sees a potential use for the other.
That does not make the offer a reconciliation. Sofia does not know Oz killed Alberto, so the partnership begins with a crucial imbalance of information. Oz accepts while hiding a fact that could destroy the deal if she discovers it.

What does the grave scene mean?
On the level of plot, Oz forces Victor into the grave as a demonstration of what failure can cost. The scene makes Oz’s power over Victor unmistakable: he relies on humiliation and fear, not just orders, to keep him in line.
Episode director Craig Zobel offered another reading in a September 30, 2024, Collider interview. He said Oz may be repeating a story he has told himself many times as much as he is trying to teach Victor. That is an interpretation of Oz’s character, rather than an additional plot fact: the scene can be both a threat to Victor and a glimpse of the survival narrative Oz uses to justify himself.
What is the ending of “Inside Man” explained?
The ending is an agreement between two people who want power, not proof that they trust each other. Sofia believes Oz can help her; Oz knows she would have reason to turn against him if she learned the truth about Alberto. He gains a partner and a possible path to the Drops shipment, while his earlier actions have helped isolate her. The alliance is therefore useful to both characters in the moment, but precarious from the start.
