Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 8, “A Great or Little Thing.” Oz Cobb defeats Sofia and takes control of Gotham’s criminal world, but his final choice—killing Vic after Vic calls him family—reveals the cost of his victory. Sofia ends up back in Arkham, where a letter from Selina Kyle links her story to the wider Gotham setting without promising what happens next. Batman does not appear.
What happens in The Penguin Episode 8?
In the season finale, Oz’s conflict with Sofia reaches its end. He secures control of Gotham’s criminal world, while Sofia loses the immediate struggle and returns to Arkham. The episode’s most consequential turn comes after Oz’s rise: he kills Vic, even though Vic calls him family.
Oz takes power and kills Vic
Oz’s victory is not a conventional underdog triumph. Having presented himself as a survivor on his way up, he shows that he will discard even a close bond to protect his position. Vic’s appeal to family does not change Oz’s decision.
Actor Rhenzy Feliz told TIME that he and showrunner Lauren LeFranc discussed Victor’s arc before filming, and that he and Colin Farrell had marked the finale scene as important. That context supports reading Vic’s death as an endpoint the production built toward, rather than a turn introduced without preparation.

Sofia returns to Arkham
Sofia is back in Arkham by the closing scenes. The immediate outcome is a defeat in her struggle with Oz, but a letter from Selina Kyle reaches her there and connects her to Gotham beyond the institution.
What does the ending mean?
Oz has won politically and criminally, but the way he treats Vic gives that victory its emotional meaning. Vic’s declaration of family cannot compete with Oz’s pursuit of power. The ending therefore reframes Oz’s climb: it is not only a story of survival, but a portrait of someone who chooses control over loyalty.

Sofia’s return to Arkham closes her immediate challenge to Oz. Selina’s letter is a story connection, not confirmation of a future reunion, escape, or crossover. The episode establishes that the letter reaches Sofia; it does not establish what she or Selina will do next.

No. Batman does not appear in Episode 8. The Gotham connections in the ending, including Selina’s letter, should not be treated as confirmation of a Batman sequel setup beyond what the episode itself shows.
