Taraji P. Henson gives Straw a compelling emotional center, but the film’s increasingly extreme chain of events is harder to accept than her performance is to resist. Tyler Perry’s 2025 Netflix drama follows a single mother through a day of mounting hardship; its premise is gripping, yet the story’s credibility is a separate matter from the force Henson brings to it.
What is Straw about?
Janiyah, played by Henson, is a hardworking single mother trying to care for her daughter as one difficult day piles pressure on her. Netflix describes the story as a breaking-point drama culminating in a shocking act of desperation. Perry wrote and directed the film. Sherri Shepherd plays bank manager Nicole Parker, while Teyana Taylor plays Detective Raymond, who empathizes with Janiyah. Netflix Tudum’s film guide identifies the central cast and premise.
Henson is the film’s strongest asset
The emotional case for Straw rests heavily on Henson. She gives Janiyah’s mounting strain a human focus, making the character’s distress more immediate than the plot’s escalating turns. The film’s own star describes it as “about a woman who reaches her tipping point,” and says, “Everything that can go wrong, goes wrong in this one day.” Those comments, reported by Netflix Tudum, capture the movie’s intended pressure-cooker effect.
That intensity can be absorbing, but it does not automatically make every development convincing. Henson’s performance invites the viewer to stay close to Janiyah even when the story asks for more suspension of disbelief than its setup can comfortably support. The result is a film in which the lead performance and the narrative do not always work at the same level.

Why the story can feel overextended
Straw builds its drama around a day when hardship seems to arrive without respite. That structure gives Perry a clear route toward a breaking point, but piling crises onto a character is not the same as making each turn feel inevitable. The central tension is whether the escalating events develop naturally from Janiyah’s circumstances or serve mainly to keep raising the emotional volume.
The available official synopsis and film guide establish the broad premise, not a detailed case for every cause-and-effect transition. So the fairest critical distinction is this: the setup is legible, and Henson makes its emotional stakes persuasive, while the film’s overall plausibility may still strain under the weight of its escalating drama. A viewer who accepts the heightened premise may find the intensity effective; one looking for tightly grounded storytelling may find the same construction frustrating.

Straw ending explained
Spoilers: The ending reveals that Janiyah’s daughter, Aria, died of a seizure the night before. Janiyah had been hallucinating Aria’s presence as she tried to care for her during the day. Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer describes the reveal and reports Perry’s comment that realizing the child was not there “was just as jarring to me as I think it is going to be to the audience.”
The twist changes how the day’s events read: Janiyah’s efforts to protect and provide for Aria are driven by grief she has not yet consciously faced. It is designed to reframe the film’s central ordeal, rather than simply add another obstacle. Perry said that directing the realization scene “floored all of us,” according to the same Tudum report. Whether the reveal lands as devastating or feels too dependent on a late explanation will depend on how convincing the preceding story has been for the viewer.

Should you watch Straw?
Watch it for Henson’s central performance and a high-pressure drama about a mother pushed toward a breaking point. Go in prepared for a heightened story whose escalating crises and final reveal may test your belief in its construction. Netflix lists Straw as a 2025 TV-MA drama with a runtime of 1 hour 48 minutes; streaming access and language options can vary by region. Netflix’s title page has the current listing.
