That makes the change feel like an age retcon, but Netflix’s published material does not establish a precise new age or birth date for her. The clearest explanation is production-related: Holly’s expanded story needed a performer closer to the age range of the original young cast.
Why does Holly seem older in Season 5?
In the first four seasons, Holly was a very young child, played by twins Anniston and Tinsley Price. Season 5 recasts her with Nell Fisher and moves her from the edge of the story into a protagonist role. Fisher describes Holly’s plot as a coming-of-age story: extraordinary events happen to her, but she gradually develops greater understanding and agency.
Executive producer Shawn Levy explained that the casting decision reflected the demands of Holly’s new place in the story. He recalled that the twins were three during the Christmas-lights hallway scene, then said the production needed someone to play Holly who was around the age of the original young ensemble. That is an explanation of the casting and creative intent, not a statement of Holly’s exact age in the story. Netflix Tudum’s interview with Fisher and Levy describes the shift.
Is Holly’s age officially retconned?
It is reasonable to call the change an apparent age retcon: Season 5 presents Holly as substantially older and more capable than her brief background appearances had led viewers to expect. But the available official material supports the change in portrayal and role, not a definitive revised age or birth date. It does not confirm an exact number that resolves every timeline question.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters because a recast does not, by itself, establish a character’s canonical age. Levy’s comments describe the age range the role called for; they do not say Holly’s in-universe age was changed to match Fisher’s. Netflix’s Season 5 cast guide calls Holly the youngest Wheeler and describes her school and belonging struggles, but does not give a precise age.
What do we know about Holly’s Season 5 story?
She moves from the periphery to the center
Fisher has said Holly mattered in earlier seasons while remaining on the periphery. In Season 5, she becomes a protagonist. The change is therefore not just a new face: the story gives Holly more room to respond, make sense of events, and act.

Her arc is framed as a coming-of-age story
Fisher describes Holly’s journey as a girl growing up through a series of extraordinary events. Netflix’s character guide says she struggles at school, seeks a place to belong, and finds comfort in an imaginary friend. Together, those details frame the older presentation as part of a new character arc, rather than simply a visual change.
A Wrinkle in Time is a touchstone
Netflix identifies Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time as a guiding light for Fisher’s portrayal and as a book Holly uses to understand her journey. It offers a literary lens on the character, but it does not supply a canonical age calculation. Netflix’s interview discusses the connection.

Does Nell Fisher’s age tell us Holly’s age?
No. TIME reported that Fisher was 13 during its Season 5 set visit, but an actor’s age is not proof of a character’s age. The production’s stated casting rationale is that Holly needed to be played by someone in the age range of the original young ensemble; neither that nor Fisher’s age gives Holly a confirmed birth date. TIME’s set report provides the actor-age context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the safest way to describe the change?
- Established: Holly is recast for Season 5 and becomes a protagonist rather than a mostly peripheral child.
- Production explanation: Levy says the expanded role called for an actor around the age of the original young cast.
- Not established in the cited official material: A definitive new canonical age or revised birth date for Holly.
So the age jump is best understood as an intentional change in presentation and storytelling, with an apparent continuity retcon but no officially stated exact age. Claims assigning Holly a precise Season 5 age go beyond the evidence cited here.
