James Gunn says the group is meant to do good outside the government, corporations, and the Justice Gang. It takes its name and some inspiration from DC Comics, but the show’s version has its own origin and purpose.
Who is on the new Checkmate team?
The season 2 finale’s eight-person roster is Chris Smith/Peacemaker, Emilia Harcourt, Leota Adebayo, Adrian Chase/Vigilante, John Economos, Sasha Bordeaux, Rip Jagger/Judo Master, and Langston Fleury, according to TV Insider’s October 10, 2025, finale report.
The team grows out of the 11th Street Kids’ relationships and their dissatisfaction with serving A.R.G.U.S. or Rick Flag Sr. Rather than continuing to take direction from those institutions, they want to act on their own judgment. Gunn described the aim as creating an organization “truly for the good” and separate from government, corporations, and the Justice Gang in Den of Geek’s interview.
What does Checkmate mean in DC Comics?
Checkmate is an established DC Comics organization associated historically with intelligence and espionage. Den of Geek traces its first appearance to 1988’s Action Comics #598 and reports that Gunn drew particular inspiration from Greg Rucka’s 2006 run.
#1 Best Overall
- An import from Medicom Toy
- Based on his appearance in the 2021 film
- Highly articulated to recreate dynamic action poses
- Four interchangeable heads included, two unhelmeted and two helmeted
- Includes a variety of weapon accessories, as well as a clipboard and pen
That comic-book background is a reference point, not a blueprint. Rucka’s version used White and Black divisions, while the season 2 finale introduces a named ensemble whose stated purpose is independent do-gooding. The screen team should not be treated as a direct reproduction of the comics organization or its structure.
How is the show’s Checkmate different?
| Aspect | Comics context | Peacemaker season 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Historically associated with intelligence and espionage. | Gunn describes an organization intended to do good independently. |
| Institutional ties | Has a history and overlap with institutions such as A.R.G.U.S. | Gunn says the new group is separate from government, corporations, and the Justice Gang. |
| Structure | Rucka’s 2006 run used White and Black divisions. | The finale introduces the eight named characters as an ensemble. |
The distinction matters: the familiar name connects the team to DC’s espionage legacy, but the finale gives this version a different formation and mission.

What happens to Peacemaker in the finale?
Checkmate’s creation is one thread in the finale, not the explanation for its cliffhanger. Rick Flag Sr. has Peacemaker sent through a dimensional door to Salvation, a planet Flag intends to use as a prison for metahumans. That development sets up a separate DCU conflict; it is not presented as Checkmate’s mission.
Will Checkmate return in the DCU?
Gunn said Checkmate will carry forward in the DCU. In comments to TV Insider after the finale, he said, “You’ll definitely see Checkmate carrying through. They’re a thing now, so they’re a part of what’s gonna happen, and I think they’re gonna be really, really good at what they do,” (TV Insider).

That confirms the group will remain relevant, but it does not announce a standalone series, identify its next project or appearance, set a date, confirm that the roster will stay unchanged, or establish a specific storyline. Any claim about where Checkmate appears next is speculation.

DC.com’s August 11, 2025, overview recommends the 2023 DC Black Label comic Peacemaker Tries Hard and Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante/Eagly Double Feature as companion reading. Peacemaker Tries Hard is not canon to the television show, so treat it as an optional comic rather than a continuation of the series.
