Spoilers for Squid Game Season 2. Park Gyu-young plays Kang No-eul, a North Korean defector who serves as a soldier in the game’s guard operation. She is not a contestant. The twist is that her early presentation can make her seem like a possible player before the story reveals where she actually fits in the games.
Who does Park Gyu-young play in Season 2?
Park Gyu-young plays Kang No-eul. Netflix’s official cast guide identifies No-eul as both a soldier and a North Korean defector, and Park describes her as carrying deep pain. The central reveal is about No-eul’s position in the operation: she is on the guard side, not among the players competing in the games.
Why can No-eul seem like a player at first?
The season initially introduces No-eul in a way that can leave viewers wondering whether she will enter the competition as a contestant. Netflix’s Season 2 ending explainer describes her as a mysterious woman who initially seems like a plausible player. As the story clarifies her role, that first impression gives way to the reveal that she is part of the staff operation.
That shift is the identity twist. No-eul is not a player hiding a contestant number or a second person in disguise; the audience is learning that her place in the story is different from what her introduction might suggest.

What is known about No-eul’s background?
The official character material identifies No-eul as a North Korean defector and a soldier, and describes her as someone with a painful past. Netflix’s official podcast page for Season 2, Episode 2 also frames her history as significant to a pivotal reveal. These sources establish her broad background, but they do not provide a scene-by-scene account of her history here.
That distinction matters: No-eul is more than a uniform or a surprise role reversal. Her defector background and personal pain are part of how the season presents her, while any larger claim about what her story symbolizes is interpretation rather than the basic plot reveal.

Did Park Gyu-young intend the reveal to surprise viewers?
Yes. In interview coverage by ELLE, Park said she hoped the turn would surprise viewers. The Korea Times likewise reported that she wanted the character’s reveal to catch audiences off guard. Those comments speak to the intended effect of the role; the clearest confirmation of No-eul’s actual job comes from the series and Netflix’s cast guide.

- Confirmed: The season presents her at first as someone who may be a player, then clarifies that she serves in the guard operation.
- Interpretation: What No-eul’s position means for the season’s broader themes, or how viewers should judge her choices, depends on how they read the scenes. The role reveal alone does not settle those questions.
