The two-hour event links a 1990s investigation to the present-day team, but Harmon’s appearance is in the Origins episode—not the contemporary NCIS investigation that follows. That makes this a satisfying Gibbs check-in, rather than a full return to the flagship series’ active case.
Which episodes make up the crossover?
The Veterans Day pairing aired back-to-back on November 11, 2025: NCIS: Origins Season 2, Episode 5, “Funny How Time Slips Away,” followed by NCIS Season 23, Episode 5, “Now And Then.” The episodes are designed as one story that moves from Gibbs’s early career to the modern team, not as two squads meeting in the same moment. Paramount+’s episode descriptions outline the linked case.

How does the case connect the two eras?
“Funny How Time Slips Away” begins in the 1990s
A naval officer’s death sends young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played by Austin Stowell, and his team to Serenity, California. The investigation brings them into conflict with a secretive town and an uncooperative sheriff. Its consequences last long enough to become relevant to agents decades later.
“Now And Then” reopens the case
In the present, an inmate’s prison break prompts the contemporary NCIS team to revisit the naval officer’s death and seek help from retired agent Vera Strickland. The second episode carries the case forward with the current team; it does not turn the hour into a present-day Gibbs investigation.

#1 Best Overall
- SEASON 23: Includes all episodes from the twenty-third season of NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
- ACTION & DRAMA: Follow the elite team as they investigate high-stakes naval crimes and uncover complex mysteries.
- BELOVED CAST: Features the talented ensemble cast that has made NCIS one of television's longest-running dramas.
- PHYSICAL FORMAT: Comes as a physical disc set, perfect for collectors and fans of the long-running series.
- GREAT FOR FANS: An ideal addition to any NCIS collection, letting you relive every thrilling moment anytime.
That structure is the crossover’s defining choice. A conventional crossover might put familiar characters together in one active investigation. Here, the link is a case passed across generations, with the earlier events supplying both the plot’s history and its emotional weight.
Why does Harmon’s return feel meaningful?
Harmon had continued as the series narrator and an executive producer, but this event let viewers see him inhabit a present-day scene as Gibbs again. In the Origins frame, retired Gibbs is in Alaska during a snowstorm with a stray dog, recounting the early investigation. The older Gibbs is not simply describing the past from outside it: the quiet scene gives the story a present-tense character connection.
The showrunners said they initially considered opening with “best of” clips of Harmon, then decided to check in with Gibbs during the special two-hour event. David J. North, NCIS: Origins showrunner, explained the change in a CinemaBlend interview: “We had originally were gonna be using ‘best of’ clips of Mark for the beginning of our hour, and in the end, Gina and I had talked and we just thought, boy, this would be a great time on a special two hour kind of NCIS movie like this to check in with Gibbs.” North said Harmon agreed: “We called Mark and he said, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s rock and roll.’ So that’s how it came together.”
The dog-centered setup makes the return feel personal rather than ceremonial. Co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal described seeing Harmon back in the role as “the highlight of our career,” adding that seeing him “put on the flannel and the boots” was emotional. The nostalgia comes through in the small visual and character details, as well as in the contrast between the 1990s Gibbs and the retired man telling the story.

What works—and what may leave viewers wanting more?
The payoff comes from memory and continuity
The event gives longtime viewers a visible Gibbs reunion and a reason for the two series to share one case. The old investigation matters to agents who came after him, so the connection is more than a cameo attached to an unrelated plot. Associated Press coverage framed the pairing as a Veterans Day special, and actor Gary Cole noted that many people have followed the show “forever.” The AP report provides that context.
The flagship hour does not extend the reunion
The limitation is also clear: Harmon’s onscreen appearance is concentrated in Origins, while NCIS follows the reopened case through its contemporary agents and Vera Strickland. That division serves the past-to-present concept, but a viewer hoping to see Harmon participate in the modern investigation may find the reunion brief. That is a fair assessment of the event’s scope, not evidence of a production mistake or a universal critical verdict.
Rank #4
The two-hour format therefore favors character memory over the immediacy of a shared-team crossover. Viewers who enjoy seeing how an old case reshapes the present get the central payoff; viewers looking primarily for a sustained Gibbs team-up receive less of it.
