What happens at the end of Outside?
After a zombie bites Lucas, Iris amputates his bitten arm. She tells Francis that Lucas needs medical attention, and Francis leaves to retrieve the car. The film’s final sequence turns on whether he can bring it back and get them moving toward help. TheReviewGeek’s ending recap describes Lucas’s bite, the amputation and Francis’s departure.
Josh shoots Francis at the bridge
At the bridge, Josh sees Francis in the darkness and mistakes him for a zombie. He shoots Francis by mistake, and Francis dies. Josh then returns to the house with the car. TheReviewGeek and The Cinemaholic both describe the shooting and the car’s return.
Did Iris and Lucas survive?
The film leaves their fate open. Josh’s return gives Iris and Lucas a way to leave and seek help, but the ending does not show them reaching a hospital, a camp or another safe place. A possible route to safety is not proof that they survive the outbreak.

So the clearest answer is: Francis does not survive, while Iris and Lucas’s eventual survival is unknown. The ending offers them a chance to get help, not a confirmed rescue.
What the ending confirms—and what it doesn’t
- Confirmed: Josh accidentally shoots Francis at the bridge, and Francis dies.
- Confirmed: Josh returns to the house with the car.
- Not confirmed: Iris and Lucas reach help or survive afterward.
The film’s final moments support a hopeful possibility for Iris and Lucas, but not a definitive answer about their later fate. Netflix describes Outside as a zombie-horror story about a family trying to survive an undead outbreak; its official cast information identifies Sid Lucero as Francis, Beauty Gonzalez as Iris, Marco Masa as Josh and Aiden Tyler Patdu as Lucas.
