Melissa McCarthy’s best films show three distinct strengths: she can steal an ensemble comedy, carry a broad action-comedy, and deliver understated dramatic work. This editorial ranking weighs her performance, the film itself, career significance, and critical reception—not a single score or critic’s list. For a dramatic showcase, start with Can You Ever Forgive Me?; for a full-throttle comedy lead, try Spy; for her breakthrough comic role, watch Bridesmaids.
How this ranking works
“Best” depends on what you want from a McCarthy performance. The order below balances the quality and distinctiveness of her work with the film’s strengths and place in her career. Rotten Tomatoes’ August 26, 2022 ranking puts Can You Ever Forgive Me? first, Spy second and Bridesmaids third. The Guardian’s November 26, 2020 critic ranking also puts Can You Ever Forgive Me? first, but places The Nines second and Spy third. Those different orders are a reminder that no ranking is definitive. Tomatometer figures below are dated snapshots from the 2022 Rotten Tomatoes page; scores can change.
The 15 best Melissa McCarthy movies
-
Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018)
McCarthy’s most affecting dramatic lead is a sharp departure from the boisterous comedy roles that first made her famous. As writer Lee Israel, she makes the character’s prickliness and loneliness part of the same portrait, rather than turning the story into a simple redemption arc. Rotten Tomatoes ranked it first on its August 26, 2022 list, with a 98% Tomatometer at the time represented by that page.
-
Spy (2015)
This is the clearest choice for seeing McCarthy lead an action-comedy. She makes the undercover-agent premise work through timing and physical comedy, while the spy-movie framework gives her more to do than simply deliver punchlines. Rotten Tomatoes placed it second on its 2022 ranking, at 94%, and praised the collaboration between McCarthy and writer-director Paul Feig.

-
Bridesmaids (2011)
McCarthy’s fearless supporting turn as Megan is the kind of scene-stealing performance that changes the energy of an ensemble whenever she appears. The film moves between gross-out gags, character comedy and real embarrassment without losing its emotional core. It was her career breakthrough and earned her an Oscar nomination; Rotten Tomatoes ranked it third in 2022, at 89%.
-
The Heat (2013)
Paired with Sandra Bullock, McCarthy plays an abrasive Boston detective whose bluntness and impulsiveness make a strong comic counterweight to Bullock’s buttoned-up agent. The mismatched-cop setup is familiar, but their contrast gives it life. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2022 ranking placed the film fifth, at 66%, and its consensus singled out McCarthy’s comic performance and Bullock as an effective foil.
-
The Nines (2007)
For viewers curious about McCarthy outside the mainstream comedy lane, this unusual, layered film is a worthwhile pick. Its place near the top of the Guardian’s November 2020 critic ranking reflects a different kind of critical preference than Rotten Tomatoes’ ordering. It is a less obvious starting point than her big comedies, but a useful example of her early work in a stranger, more demanding setting.

St. Vincent (2014)
McCarthy plays a single mother trying to keep her life together while her son forms an unlikely bond with their hard-drinking neighbor, played by Bill Murray. Her performance grounds a film that mixes comedy with tenderness, and lets her play the strained, practical side of a parent rather than the broadest comic version of one.

Ghostbusters (2016)
As part of an ensemble reboot, McCarthy brings familiar comic confidence to a supernatural-comedy setup, with room for the group’s chemistry to matter as much as any one performance. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2022 ranking page listed it at 74%, a useful reception snapshot rather than a final verdict on the film.
-
This Is 40 (2012)
McCarthy’s role is a supporting one, but it shows how effectively she can disrupt a polished ensemble comedy. Her scenes add a sharper, more confrontational comic register to Judd Apatow’s story of marriage and middle age, making this a good pick for a compact dose of her scene-stealing style.

-
Tammy (2014)
In one of her early starring vehicles, McCarthy plays a woman whose messy road trip becomes a chance to reset her life. The movie’s broad comic approach is a better fit for viewers who enjoy her unruly, impulsive characters than for those seeking the restraint of Can You Ever Forgive Me?
-
The Boss (2016)
McCarthy leans into brash, larger-than-life comedy as a disgraced businesswoman trying to reinvent herself. The appeal is her commitment to the character’s shameless confidence and the film’s cartoonish energy; choose it for an unapologetically broad comic lead.

The Happytime Murders (2018)
This raunchy noir spoof pairs McCarthy with a world of puppets, turning the contrast between hard-boiled crime conventions and deliberately crude humor into its central joke. It is a distinctly odd entry in her filmography, best suited to viewers who want an offbeat comedy rather than a showcase of her dramatic range.

Life of the Party (2018)
McCarthy plays a recently divorced mother who returns to college alongside her daughter. The setup gives her a chance to move between maternal warmth and exuberant, fish-out-of-water comedy, making it an easygoing option for viewers in the mood for a familiar, upbeat comedy lead.
-
Identity Thief (2013)
McCarthy’s high-energy performance is the main draw in this road comedy, where an ordinary man tries to track down the woman who stole his identity. It is a vehicle for her forceful comic persona more than a showcase for subtlety, and works best for viewers who enjoy a loud, conflict-driven buddy pairing.
-
Thunder Force (2021)
In this superhero comedy, McCarthy plays one half of a friendship tested by an unexpected return to crime-fighting. Its playful premise offers another variation on her team-comedy strengths, though the film’s appeal rests more on the central pairing and comic concept than on the dramatic precision of her best work.

- For the strongest dramatic performance: Can You Ever Forgive Me?
- For a starring comedy with action: Spy
- For her breakthrough ensemble role: Bridesmaids
