What is happening with the Grinch sequel?
TheWrap reported on June 18, 2026 that Universal and Imagine Entertainment had a sequel to the 2000 live-action film in development. The report said Jim Carrey and Ron Howard were in talks to return; it did not say they had signed on.
TheWrap named Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel as the scriptwriters and said Brian Grazer was expected to return as producer. It also reported that Dr. Seuss Enterprises CEO Susan Brandt would oversee the project with Universal executives Britt Hennemuth and Christina Hoffrogge. These are details attributed to the report, not a studio announcement establishing a production or release schedule.
The report gave no release date. The sources cited here do not include a public studio announcement confirming the film, its cast, or when it might reach theaters. The careful answer is that a follow-up has been reported in development, but its release is not confirmed.

Which Grinch 2 does the title refer to?
“The Grinch 2” can refer to projects in different media. The reported feature-film sequel concerns the 2000 Jim Carrey adaptation; the similarly named game and the Grinch book sequel are separate projects.

The Grinch 2: Saving Christmas is a game
Outright Games announced that The Grinch 2: Saving Christmas launched on September 18, 2026 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The publisher describes it as a 3D platforming adventure with the Grinch and Max, involving Who-ville’s Christmas tree contest. Its title does not mean the reported live-action film has been released.

Is the reported sequel connected to the 2018 animated film?
No connection is established in the cited reporting. TheWrap’s report identifies the proposed follow-up as a sequel to the 2000 live-action movie starring Jim Carrey. Illumination identifies its 2018 animated film, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, as a separate title. The evidence here does not establish that the 2018 film is getting a sequel.

How the Grinch Lost Christmas! is a book sequel announced by Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Random House in 2023. The Associated Press reported that Alastair Heim wrote it and Aristides Ruiz illustrated it. It is not evidence that a film has been released.
