Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day brought an ensemble of familiar faces together for its 1996 story of an alien invasion. Thirty years after its July 3, 1996 release, the cast is easy to revisit—but older “where are they now” roundups are not a reliable guide to every performer’s activities in 2026. Here are the principal roles, the career milestones that can be dated, and the limits of what is currently established.
Independence Day at a glance
- Release: July 3, 1996, according to the official 20th Century Studios page.
- Rating and runtime: PG-13; 2 hours 24 minutes, as listed by the studio.
- Director and screenwriter: Roland Emmerich directed the film, co-written with Dean Devlin. In a 2026 anniversary interview, Emmerich recalled the casting process: “At that point, Will Smith was nobody, and we had to really fight for him.” That is Emmerich’s recollection, not an objective description of Smith’s career at the time (Space.com, July 3, 2026).
- Reported box office: Space.com reported a worldwide gross of $817.4 million in 2026 and described the movie as the top-grossing film of 1996. The gross is a historical reported figure, not a current-value comparison.

Fandango also lists Kiersten Warren as Tiffany, Harry Connick Jr. as Captain Jimmy “Raven” Wilder, and Christine Devine as a video newscaster.
What is known about the cast’s careers after the film?
Some widely repeated “where are they now” material is historical rather than current. A Fox News retrospective credited to Snakkle, published July 3, 2013 and updated in April 2016, records career notes from that period. It mentions Vivica A. Fox’s appearances in Set It Off, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, and Curb Your Enthusiasm; Ross Bagley’s work on Providence, The Wild Thornberrys, and Judging Amy; and Jeff Goldblum’s roles in Law & Order: CI, The Switch, and Morning Glory (Fox News/Snakkle). These are examples of career history through the retrospective’s update—not confirmation of what those actors are doing in 2026.

A separate dated milestone: Yahoo Entertainment’s 2021 retrospective noted that Bill Pullman parodied his Independence Day speech in a 2021 Budweiser advertisement encouraging COVID-19 vaccination (Yahoo Entertainment).
Why Will Smith did not return for the sequel
Will Smith did not appear in 2016’s Independence Day: Resurgence. TIME reported in June 2016 that Smith described his decision as a scheduling conflict involving other films. The sequel’s in-universe explanation is separate: Steven Hiller had died in the story before the events of Resurgence (TIME). The character’s fate should not be confused with the actor’s real-world reason for not returning.

What “where are they now” can—and cannot—answer in 2026
The available anniversary coverage does not provide a current directory of every original cast member. Space.com’s July 3, 2026 feature is an interview with Emmerich and Devlin, not a person-by-person update. Without newer, individual evidence, it would be misleading to claim what every actor is currently making, whether anyone has retired, or details about their residence, health, or personal lives.
The film itself remains listed by 20th Century Studios as available on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital, with Hulu linked as a viewing option. Streaming catalogs and retail stock can change, so check the studio listing and local services at the time you plan to watch. The studio page does not establish a price or a specific disc edition.
