Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is a 2024 Western drama directed by Kevin Costner, who also stars. The film follows several groups of people facing upheaval and hardship in the American West around the Civil War. US listings surfaced for Hulu, Netflix and Prime Video, but availability and access terms vary by location and can change; check the title page for your region before subscribing, renting or buying.
What is Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 about?
The film follows settlers, an Apache tribe and other characters as they confront the pressures of life and expansion in the West. The Festival de Cannes’ official background copy describes it as a story of families, friends and foes, set amid frontier hardships and involving Native American people already living on the land alongside settlers seeking to establish themselves. That is the festival’s promotional framing, not an independent historical assessment.
Descriptions use different time spans. Netflix Tudum frames the broader saga across 15 years before and after the Civil War. Hulu’s synopsis for Chapter 1 focuses more narrowly on the Civil War years, 1861–1865. These are distinct descriptions: the broader saga’s scope should not be mistaken for a claim that the first chapter covers exactly the same span.
Is it based on a true story or a book?
No. Netflix Tudum describes the film as fictional and says it is an original story by Kevin Costner and Jon Baird, not an adaptation of a book.
