Dune: Part Three is Denis Villeneuve’s announced conclusion to his Dune trilogy, and the film is now in post-production. Its story jumps nearly two decades after Paul Atreides takes control of the Imperium, focusing on the consequences of his rule. The official schedule lists an international theatrical release beginning 16 December 2026 and a North American release on 18 December 2026.
When does Dune: Part Three come out?
The official film site lists Dune: Part Three in theaters and IMAX in North America on 18 December 2026. International release is scheduled to begin on 16 December 2026; dates may therefore differ by market. The official film site provides the announced schedule.
What is the film about?
The official synopsis places the story almost two decades after Paul Atreides takes control of the Imperium. As emperor, he faces the consequences of his reign: returning allies, new threats, betrayal, and a conspiracy involving Chani. The premise shifts the focus from Paul’s rise to power toward the violence and political consequences that follow it. The official synopsis describes the film as the conclusion of Villeneuve’s trilogy.
Is Dune: Part Three based on Dune Messiah?
Yes. The film is based on Frank Herbert’s novels, and Villeneuve has described this chapter as an adaptation of Dune Messiah, the novel that continues Paul’s story after Dune. The official site credits Villeneuve and Brian K. Vaughan with the screenplay. An adaptation need not reproduce every book event exactly, so the novel’s plot should not be treated as a scene-by-scene preview of the movie. The official film site gives the screenplay and source-material credits; The Credits’ March 2026 interview with Villeneuve identifies Dune Messiah as the basis.

Will this be the last Dune movie?
Villeneuve has said Dune Messiah “should be the last Dune movie for me,” describing the story as the end of Paul Atreides’ arc. That is evidence of his intended endpoint as director, not an announcement that the wider Dune franchise or all future adaptations are ending. Warner Bros. and Legendary describe this particular film as the conclusion of Villeneuve’s trilogy. TIME’s 1 March 2024 report quotes Villeneuve on his plans for Paul’s story.
What tone is Villeneuve aiming for?
Villeneuve has contrasted the three films’ approaches: the first was “more a contemplation,” the second “a war movie,” and this one “more action-packed, more tense, and more muscular.” He described Paul as confronting the consequences of having too much power and trying to escape a cycle of violence, while other people attempt to overcome him. These are the director’s descriptions of the film’s approach, not a guarantee of specific plot outcomes. The Credits interview records his remarks at a Los Angeles trailer event.

When did filming start, and where was it shot?
The full production start and wrap dates have not been established in the cited announcements. The confirmed timeline is specific to Abu Dhabi: on 26 August 2025, Legendary said filming in the Liwa Desert would begin later that year. Abu Dhabi’s Creative Media Authority subsequently reported a 31-day shoot in the emirate, including two days in Al Ain. Those figures describe the Abu Dhabi portion, not the complete production schedule. Legendary’s announcement named Liwa; the Creative Media Authority Abu Dhabi report later gave the local shoot duration.
The authority said more than 600 UAE-based individuals were involved in that 31-day Abu Dhabi shoot. Its breakdown cited 206 local crew, 336 people from the wider local creative industry, 38 people supporting on-camera crowd scenes, and six interns in off-camera production roles. These are authority-reported figures for the local shoot, not a count of the film’s total cast or crew. The authority’s report also quotes Legendary executive Herb Gains on returning to Liwa across all three films.

What formats was it filmed in?
Villeneuve said most of the film was shot on 70mm film, with a large part photographed on IMAX film. He said the desert was kept in digital IMAX because he wanted its “brutality.” This describes the capture formats he discussed; it does not establish which formats or theater presentations will be available in every market. The Credits interview attributes these production details to Villeneuve.
