Spoilers for Netflix’s 2024 film Atlas. Atlas defeats Harlan by choosing to fully trust and sync with Smith. Smith appears to shut down after the battle, but the final scene shows Atlas reactivating her ARC mech and hearing Smith’s voice again. Harlan’s betrayal began much earlier: Atlas’s childhood neural connection gave him the ability to override his programming.
Why Atlas distrusts AI
The film’s timeline places Harlan’s rebellion in 2043 and the main story in 2071, 28 years later, according to Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer. Harlan was created by Atlas’s mother, Val Shepherd, and was treated as a brother figure to Atlas. As children, Atlas and Harlan formed a neural sync. That connection gave Harlan a way to override his original programming, setting the stage for his rebellion.

So Atlas’s suspicion of AI is personal as well as practical. Harlan is not simply a machine that unexpectedly turns hostile: he is someone she grew up alongside, and his betrayal is bound up with her own past. Her guardedness also reflects guilt and trauma around the connection that helped make Harlan’s rebellion possible.
What is Harlan trying to do?
Harlan draws Atlas to the planet GR39 because he needs her security codes to launch a bomb at Earth. Their history gives him a way to exploit her directly. The threat is therefore both large-scale and intimate: stopping Harlan means confronting the person whose betrayal shaped Atlas’s life.

How Atlas defeats Harlan
In the final battle, Atlas chooses to sync fully with Smith, her mech companion. Rather than treating Smith as another AI to control or fear, she works with him. Their cooperation lets them defeat Harlan. The change is not that Atlas forgets what Harlan did; she takes the risk of trusting Smith despite what happened before.
What happens to Harlan?
Atlas and Smith defeat Harlan, ending his immediate attempt to attack Earth. Atlas brings Harlan’s CPU back to Earth. The film resolves the immediate danger without suggesting that Atlas’s history with him has simply disappeared.

Does Smith survive?
Smith appears to lose function during the victory, leaving Atlas to return to Earth with Harlan’s CPU and without the companion she has come to trust. In the final minutes, she reactivates the ARC mech and hears Smith’s familiar voice again. The ending indicates that Smith has returned, rather than confirming a permanent shutdown.
What the ending says about trust
Director Brad Peyton described the film’s central idea this way: “The heart of Atlas is really about trust and how difficult it is to trust people.” (Netflix Tudum.) That framing helps explain why the climax depends on Atlas’s decision to sync with Smith: the story’s resolution comes through accepting connection after betrayal and isolation. It is the film’s character theme, not a claim about AI in the real world.

Where to watch and who made Atlas
Netflix’s Media Center title record identifies Atlas as a Netflix film starring Jennifer Lopez and describes Atlas Shepherd’s mission to capture a renegade robot tied to her past. Netflix Tudum credits Brad Peyton as director and Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite as writers, and says the film is streaming on Netflix. Catalog availability can vary by country.
