NYT Connections puzzle #401 is the historical game from Tuesday, July 16, 2024. Use the progressive clues below if you want a nudge before seeing the categories and full solution.
How to approach Connections #401
Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four that share a theme. Each group is marked by a color, from yellow (easiest) to purple (trickiest), and the game has one intended solution. The New York Times Help Center notes that words can appear to fit more than one category, so look for the four-word pattern that holds together best.

Can you replay the July 16, 2024 puzzle?
The New York Times Help Center says its Connections archive extends back to June 12, 2023, which includes puzzle #401. Its currently published guidance says archive access is for All Access and Games subscribers; archived play affects some statistics but not streaks, and a completed archived puzzle cannot be replayed. These are current access terms and may change. The daily game releases at midnight in the player’s timezone and is available on NYT Games on the web, the NYT Games app, nytimes.com/theathletic, and the NYT News app. The Help Center says an account is not required to play, though signing in supports progress across platforms.
