How Connections works
NYT Connections presents 16 words to sort into four related groups of four. For this puzzle, the groups hinge on legal actions, a color, and the positions of names in two famous duos.

Why the two duo groups are easy to mix up
Both groups contain names associated with duos, so the distinction is not simply “people” versus “cartoon characters.” The blue group takes the second-named member of a famous real-life pair; the purple group takes the first-named member of a cartoon rodent pair. Checking both the kind of duo and the name’s position helps separate the four names in each set.
