Toby Keith described living with cancer as “a little bit of a roller coaster,” with good days and sudden ups and downs. When he said this to E! News on September 28, 2023, he also stressed that he felt good that day. It was a personal snapshot, not a prognosis or a claim about how a particular treatment was working. Keith died in February 2024, aged 62.
What did Toby Keith mean by a “roller coaster”?
Speaking to E! News before the September 28, 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards, where he received the Country Icon Award, Keith described the unevenness of his experience: “It’s a little bit of a roller coaster,” he said. “You get good days and, you know, you’re up and down, up and down. It’s always zero to 60 and 60 to zero, but I feel good today.” E! News reported his remarks.

The phrase conveyed abrupt changes between better and harder days as Keith experienced them. His words do not identify a specific cause for those changes, connect them to a particular treatment, or establish a clinical outlook. The important qualification is his timing: “I feel good today” described how he felt that day, not a continuing health update.
When did Keith share his stomach cancer diagnosis?
Keith publicly disclosed in June 2022 that he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer the previous fall. In the announcement, quoted by ABC News, he said: “Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. I’ve spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery.”

His statement establishes what he chose to share: the diagnosis, the approximate timing, and that he had received chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. It does not give the cancer’s stage or a detailed medical account.
How his public updates unfolded
| Date | What was publicly reported |
|---|---|
| Fall 2021 | Keith later said he was diagnosed with stomach cancer the previous fall. |
| June 2022 | He disclosed the diagnosis and said he had spent the preceding six months receiving chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. |
| June 2023 | E! News reported that Keith had said his tumor had shrunk by a third. That is a reported statement, not an independently verified clinical measurement in the reporting cited here. |
| September 28, 2023 | At the People’s Choice Country Awards, he told E! News he felt good that day and described the experience as a roller coaster of good days and ups and downs. |
| February 2024 | Keith died at age 62. The Associated Press reported his death and quoted his family’s statement: “He fought his fight with grace and courage.” |
The reported tumor-size update does not, on its own, establish prognosis or treatment efficacy. The available public remarks provide Keith’s account at particular moments; they are not a complete medical history.

Keith’s earlier roller-coaster remark
In comments to KWTV reported by the Associated Press, Keith also said: “Cancer is a roller coaster. You just sit here and wait on it to go away. It might never go away.” The AP’s account quotes him describing the uncertainty of living with cancer; it does not turn that personal reflection into a prediction about his own outcome.
