Who performed the Toby Keith tribute?
The tribute took place at the 2024 CMT Music Awards on April 7 at Austin’s Moody Center. Hosted by Kelsea Ballerini, the past broadcast aired on CBS. Brooks & Dunn, Sammy Hagar and Lainey Wilson performed, backed by Keith’s longtime band. CMT’s April 4, 2024 announcement also named Lukas Nelson and Roger Clemens as special guests.

Which songs did they sing?
The Associated Press’s April 7 recap reported that Brooks & Dunn performed “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” Hagar sang “I Love This Bar,” and Wilson closed the tribute with “How Do You Like Me Now?!” Keith’s longtime band accompanied all three performances.
Were Toby Keith’s children at the tribute?
Yes. Entertainment Tonight reported that Keith’s adult children—Krystal Keith, Shelley Covel Rowland and Stelen Keith Covel—were in the audience and became emotional as cameras showed their reaction during the tribute. The report described them as moved by the performance and the audience’s love for their father; it did not include a statement from the children about their private feelings. ET also reported that Keith’s wife, Tricia Lucus, was absent that evening.

How did the tribute conclude?
After the music, longtime friend Roger Clemens thanked Keith’s wife and children and led a toast, according to the AP. Backstage, Hagar told ET he had been “such a wreck” and was relieved to have made it through the song. Ronnie Dunn likewise joked to ET that it was difficult to keep his emotions in check.

CMT’s 2024 announcement described Keith as having sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, with 61 singles charting on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, including 32 No. 1 hits and 42 additional top-10 songs. The announcement also noted his posthumous 2024 induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame and his 2021 National Medal of Arts. These figures are attributed to CMT’s announcement.
