Literary historian Chandak Sengoopta argues that Ray’s celebrated nonsense is more than playful wordplay: its farces and absurdities also expose the distance between colonial-era Bengali society’s ideals and its everyday behavior. That is a persuasive reading of the works, not proof that every comic poem carries one fixed political message.
Who was Sukumar Ray?
Sukumar Ray (1887–1923) was a Bengali writer best known for comic verse and works including Abol Tabol. The headline echoes a 2016 Scroll.in article by Chandak Sengoopta, excerpted from his book The Rays Before Satyajit: Creativity and Modernity in Colonial India. Sengoopta places Ray’s writing in the social and political world of colonial Bengal and asks readers to look beyond the label “nonsense.” Read Sengoopta’s article on Scroll.in.
What was Ray satirizing?
In Sengoopta’s account, Ray’s comedy targets the ways people and institutions fail to live up to their stated principles. The works range across social types—from politicians and clerks to policemen—and make grand claims, social deference, and public posturing look absurd. Sengoopta describes this body of writing as a “counter-discourse”: not a solemn political tract, but a comic alternative view of colonial everyday life.
The interpretation also puts pressure on a simple division between British rulers and Indian subjects. In one scene from Jhhalapala, a patriotic singer who opposes the British is beaten by an Indian audience. Sengoopta reads the episode as a joke with a sharp edge: people may help enforce colonial power themselves, out of fear or habit, even while patriotic feeling is voiced. The scene’s political significance is Sengoopta’s reading, rather than an established statement of Ray’s own intent.

Which works show the satirical edge?
Jhhalapala (1911): flattery and fear
This farce centers on a wealthy landowner who outmaneuvers the favor-seekers and flatterers around him. Its comic treatment of status and patronage sits alongside the patriotic-singer episode, which Sengoopta reads as a portrait of colonial power reproduced through local behavior.
Lakshmaner Shaktishel: epic heroism made ridiculous
Ray reworks an episode from the Ramayana as comic theater. Ravana steals from the fallen Lakshmana; Hanuman resists the errand to fetch the healing mountain; and a joke about a swadeshi remedy brings contemporary politics into the mythic setting. The effect is not simply to reject the epic, but to let familiar heroic expectations collide with petty, recognizably human conduct.

Bhabuk Sabha and Shabdakalpadrum: words, meanings, and pretension
Bhabuk Sabha appeared in the Bengali periodical Probasi in 1914, though Sengoopta says it had been written earlier. The 1915 play Shabdakalpadrum explores the separation of words from meanings. It was performed at Santiniketan on Rabindranath Tagore’s birthday in 1917, according to Sengoopta. Together, these works make language itself a comic subject: words can sound weighty while saying little, or fail to mean what their users imagine.
Chalachittachanchari: intellectual life as social performance
This work mocks polite rivalry and pseudo-intellectual behavior among spiritually inclined intellectuals. Sengoopta notes that readers have suggested different real-world analogies for its figures; he does not settle those identifications as fact. The more secure point is the satire of self-importance and competition dressed up as elevated thought.

Bhoy Peo Na, Baburam Sapurey, and Ekushey Ain: political readings
Sengoopta interprets Bhoy Peo Na as a lampoon of British claims to benevolence, Baburam Sapurey (1921) as a joke at the expense of nonviolent nationalists, and Ekushey Ain (1922) as an evocation of colonial laws used to suppress dissent. These are interpretive claims about the works, not uncontested summaries of what Ray intended. The article also places Ekushey Ain alongside the contemporary political context of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s magazines Jugabani and Dhumketu and his arrest; those details are presented here as context reported by Sengoopta, not independently confirmed facts.
Was Abol Tabol political satire?
Sengoopta’s answer is that it can be read that way, without reducing it to politics alone. Abol Tabol is among Ray’s best-known works, and the article connects its comic world to a broader satirical portrait of colonial Bengali society. That reading is strongest when it points to recognizable targets—social flattery, empty authority, political posturing, or the gap between public principle and private conduct. It need not mean that each poem encodes a specific political event, or that nonsense stops being nonsense once a political interpretation is available.

How to read the politics without overclaiming
It helps to distinguish what the article dates or describes from what its author infers. The publication and performance dates above are claims reported by Sengoopta; the larger argument that the works critique colonial power, nationalism, or social behavior is his interpretation. The available account does not establish a single definitive key to Ray’s satire, and it does not independently verify his original texts or translations. Readers can therefore take the political reading seriously while leaving room for the works’ other pleasures: verbal invention, theatrical surprise, and the comedy of people behaving foolishly.
