The Seven Times the Oscars Produced Two Winners in One Category

Seven Oscar categories have had two winners. Six were exact ties; the 1931/32 Best Actor award was shared under an older rule despite a one-vote margin.

Seven Oscar categories have produced two winners: six exact vote ties in the Academy’s historical list, plus a 2026 tie reported by CBS News. One important wrinkle: the 1931/32 Best Actor award was not an exact tie. Fredric March received one more vote than Wallace Beery, but the rule then in force gave the award to a nominee within three votes of the winner.

All seven shared Oscar awards, in order

The Academy labels awards by the year of the achievement, which can differ from the ceremony year. The 2026 entry comes from CBS News; the Academy’s tie document was updated only through the 88th Awards and does not include it.

  1. 1931/32, 5th Awards — Actor: Fredric March for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Wallace Beery for The Champ. March led by one vote; the contemporary rule also awarded the Oscar to an achievement within three votes of the winner. The Academy explicitly says this was “Not a true tie.” Academy tie record.
  2. 1949, 22nd Awards — Documentary (Short Subject): A Chance to Live and So Much for So Little. The ceremony took place in 1950. Academy tie record.
  3. 1968, 41st Awards — Actress: Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter and Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl. The ceremony took place in 1969. Academy tie record.
  4. 1986, 59th Awards — Documentary (Feature): Artie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got and Down and Out in America. Academy tie record.
  5. 1994, 67th Awards — Short Film (Live Action): Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life and Trevor. Academy tie record.
  6. 2012, 85th Awards — Sound Editing: Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty. Academy tie record.
  7. 2026, 98th Awards — Best Live-Action Short Film: The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva. CBS News reported the shared award as the seventh occasion of two winners in one category. CBS News report.

Why the 1932 Best Actor result needs a qualification

The familiar description “Oscar tie” is technically inaccurate for March and Beery. According to the Academy, March had one more vote. Under the rule at the time, a nominee whose result came within three votes of the winner also received the award. The Academy’s record does not publish the full vote totals, so the documented margin is one vote—not a specific ballot count.

The remaining six cases in the Academy’s available tie list are exact ties. Counting those six together with the 2026 report gives seven shared-award outcomes, rather than seven identical vote totals.

What an Oscar tie means at the ceremony

A tie means both recipients receive the award in that category; it does not mean one winner is chosen later. Multiple winners also mean the number of statuettes required cannot always be known in advance. The Academy explained in A Brief History of the Oscar that ties and categories with multiple recipients make the exact number of statuettes to be presented unpredictable. That explanation appears in the document’s 2015 ceremony context. Academy, A Brief History of the Oscar.

How current are the Academy’s records?

The Academy’s tie-specific PDF is labeled updated through the 88th Awards and lists outcomes through the 85th. Its statistics index covers awards through the 2024 (97th) Awards, presented March 2, 2025; that is a different record and update boundary. The Academy Awards Database homepage says it is complete through the 2025 (98th) Awards, presented March 15, 2026. The 2026 tie is therefore included here on the basis of CBS News reporting, not the older tie PDF. Academy Award Statistics · Official Academy Awards Database.
