The Surfer is a psychological thriller, not a conventional surf-sports film: Nicolas Cage plays a man whose return to his childhood beach in Australia spirals into humiliation, confrontation and an increasingly unstable grip on reality. Its most distinctive asset is Cage’s unnerving performance; whether the film’s escalation sustains its force is more debatable.
What is The Surfer about?
Directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin, the 2024 thriller follows a man who returns to an Australian beach from his childhood with his teenage son. Local surfers tell him he cannot use the break, and their hostility turns a family visit into a pressure-cooker confrontation. As the indignities accumulate, the protagonist becomes bloodied, sunburned and thirsty, and the boundary between what is happening and what he perceives grows uncertain.

The setting is Yallingup in Western Australia. Finnegan said local surfers joined the cast and crew, and that Cage took local surf lessons for the film. The story’s beach is less a showcase for the sport than a contested space where belonging, status and control become personal.
Does Nicolas Cage’s performance work?
Cage gives the breakdown an increasingly abstract edge. In an Associated Press interview, he said that an unconventional acting choice still needs to serve the story: “You can do it with acting, but it still has to land with the director and with the script in such a way where it moves the story forward and doesn’t become self-indulgent.” That aim suits a character whose certainty is eroding, though the film’s intensity may be more compelling in its accumulation than in its later turns.

Associated Press critic Jake Coyle praised Cage’s near-disintegration performance but found the third act less transfixing. Coyle awarded the film three stars out of four; that is one critic’s assessment, not a measure of critical consensus. [Associated Press review]
What is the film saying about masculinity?
The conflict can invite a reading of masculinity in crisis, but Finnegan cautioned against reducing the film to that theme. “To me, it wasn’t a film about toxic masculinity. I mean, there was elements of masculinity in crisis, and that’s something that does exist,” he told the Associated Press. That distinction leaves room to read the film as a broader portrait of a man losing control under social pressure, rather than as a single-issue argument. [Associated Press interview]
Finnegan has cited the Lunada Bay surfers as an inspiration, while Martin reportedly drew on an encounter in which two surfers changed into suits and fought violently on a beach. These are inspirations described by the filmmakers, not evidence that The Surfer reenacts one true event. [Surfer interview with Lorcan Finnegan]

Where can you watch The Surfer?
Availability depends on country and can change. Hulu has a listing for the film, but that listing does not establish that it is currently streamable in every territory. [Hulu title listing]
For Australia, Stan announced in February 2025 that the film would open in cinemas on May 15 and stream exclusively on Stan from June 15, 2025. That dated release announcement is not a guarantee of current catalog availability. Check the service’s listing in your region before subscribing or planning a viewing. [Stan announcement]
Is The Surfer suitable for you?
The Associated Press lists the US rating as R for language, suicide, some violence, drug content and sexual material. Viewers should use the rating guidance for their own region where it differs. The film is best approached as an abrasive psychological thriller built around mounting distress, not as a breezy story about surfing. [Associated Press review]
