In a 2017 interview with The Scroll, screenwriter Sagar Sarhadi traced his path from Urdu stories and plays to Hindi cinema through memories of Partition, a belief in socially meaningful work, and films shaped by human experience. His closing thought was simple: even in bleak times, people need hope to keep living and working.
Who was Sagar Sarhadi?
Sagar Sarhadi was the name used by Ganga Sagar Talwar, born in 1933 in the North-West Frontier Province of undivided India. In Aditya Sharma’s interview for The Scroll, published May 13, 2017, Sarhadi recalled watching films as a child in Baffa, near Abbottabad. One early memory was seeing Heer-Ranjha twice: he returned to the cinema after the first viewing.
His family fled during Partition. Sarhadi described a threatening incident at home and their escape by truck through Srinagar to Delhi. He remembered the loss of his hometown, its landscape and the people left behind as a lasting source of anguish. “To give vent to my anguish, I began scribbling,” he told Sharma. This is Sarhadi’s personal recollection, not a comprehensive account of Partition.
How did he move from Urdu writing to Hindi films?
Stories and plays came first
Before working in Hindi cinema, Sarhadi wrote Urdu short stories and plays. He moved to Mumbai, continued his education and reading, and worked in several jobs. According to The Scroll obituary published after his death, director Yash Chopra hired him to write Kabhie Kabhie after seeing one of his plays performed. The film’s success began a long association between the two.

His screenwriting credits included Kabhie Kabhie, Silsila, Faasle, Chandni and Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai. The Scroll obituary also identifies Sarhadi’s Urdu story Raakha as the basis for Noorie. The credits span romantic films and work with other concerns; they do not reduce his career to a single genre.
Ideals and the realities of film work
Sarhadi described himself as a Marxist and connected that outlook to a practical obligation: “I am a Marxist and I was taught that if the world is not a good place to live, then work to make it good.” His accounts also registered the commercial pressures around filmmaking. In Farhana Farook’s Filmfare interview, published May 19, 2016, he said, “Being left alone today is the high price I paid for idealism.”

What inspired Bazaar?
Sarhadi told Sharma that a newspaper report about impoverished women in Hyderabad being married to older Arab men for money disturbed him. He went to Hyderabad, spoke with people who knew about the practice, and attended a wedding before writing the screenplay. The film grew from his effort to understand a form of social exploitation; the women’s circumstances, rather than sensational detail, are central to that context.
The two Scroll accounts describe a difficult route to release: distributors initially showed little interest, but the film later became a jubilee hit. In the separate 2016 Filmfare interview, Sarhadi said it was made on a shoestring budget of 13 lakhs; that is his reported figure, not an independently verified production account.

Literary sources behind the songs
In the interview, Sarhadi credited Bazaar’s songs to a mix of literary sources: Zehre-E-Ishq by Mirza Shauq, a poem by Mir Taqi Mir, and a poem by Makhdoom Mohiuddin. He identified “Dekh Lo Aaj Humko” with Zehre-E-Ishq.
What did Sarhadi say about hope?
At the end of the May 13, 2017 interview, Sarhadi said: “We are living in bleak times but if we stop hoping, we’ll lose our will to live and work.” It was his closing thought in that conversation, linking hope not to easy optimism but to the willingness to continue living and doing work.

What happened after the interview?
Sarhadi died in 2021, aged 88, according to The Scroll obituary. That later fact provides retrospective context; it was not part of his 2017 interview. The obituary records a career that continued beyond the films most commonly associated with him. It says Chausar, made in 2004, was released in 2018. The 2017 interview spells the title Chauser.
In the interview, Sarhadi also discussed a financial dispute connected to Tere Shaher Mein, which he said was never released, and his work on Deewana and dialogue for Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai. These details add to the picture of a writer navigating both creative commitments and the practical setbacks of film production.
