“His Name Was Martin,” The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10, centers on a defining crisis for Lucy Chen: she kills a civilian in self-defense while on duty. The episode also sends Nolan, Harper and Miles into danger at an abandoned hospital, while Bailey investigates at the Pentagon. Those parallel stories give Lucy’s trauma a consequential setting—but also raise the episode’s central dramatic question: does her experience get enough room amid everything else happening?
What happens in “His Name Was Martin”
Episode listings identify Season 8, Episode 10 as “His Name Was Martin,” rather than “Lucy Chen’s Darkest Hour.” TV Guide reports that Lucy Chen and Celina Juarez are called to Westview Hospital, a former mental institution that has been abandoned. Nolan, Harper and Miles are already checking on a cleanup crew after losing contact with its supervisor. During the incident, Lucy kills a civilian in self-defense while working in the line of duty. TV Guide’s episode interview describes the event as life-changing for Lucy.

The official Prime Video listing gives the broader shape of the hour: Nolan, Harper and Miles face danger when a routine check takes a sudden turn, while Bailey conducts a covert Pentagon investigation at Lieutenant Grey’s request. Its listing identifies the episode as TV-14, 48 minutes, and dated March 8, 2026. Check Prime Video’s current listing for viewing availability, which can vary by location and date.
Lucy’s crisis is the episode’s real test
A police officer’s use of lethal force can change the emotional direction of a character’s story even when the act is framed as self-defense. The important dramatic question is not simply whether Lucy made the right decision in the moment; it is what the decision does to her afterward. Melissa O’Neil characterizes Lucy’s experience as life-changing, giving the episode’s title-worthy darkness a clear basis without reducing the event to a routine action beat.

That aftermath is where an episode like this has to earn its weight. The immediate danger at the hospital can explain the circumstances, but the lasting impact depends on whether Lucy’s response is allowed to develop: how she processes what happened, how it affects her work and relationships, and whether the story treats the consequences as more than a temporary shock. The available episode description and interview establish the event and its significance, but do not settle how fully the hour sustains that aftermath. That is the key measure for viewers weighing the episode’s emotional success.
How the parallel plots shape the hour
The Westview Hospital danger
The hospital plot places Lucy’s crisis inside a larger emergency rather than isolating it from the ensemble. Nolan, Harper and Miles are investigating why a cleanup supervisor has gone silent; Lucy and Celina are called in to help. This setup connects the characters through a shared crisis, but it also creates a pacing challenge: suspense around the crew and the building must support, not crowd out, the human consequences of Lucy’s actions.
Rank #2
Bailey’s Pentagon investigation
Bailey’s covert investigation, requested by Grey, adds a separate thread away from Westview. It broadens the episode’s scope, though it is less directly connected to Lucy’s defining event in the available synopsis. For the hour to feel cohesive, the shift between the personal crisis and this institutional investigation needs to feel purposeful rather than like a competing story that steals time from Lucy’s response.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the “darkest hour” framing fit?
It fits as a description of the crisis Lucy faces: she kills a civilian in self-defense while on duty, and O’Neil describes the experience as life-changing. But the strength of that framing ultimately depends on what the episode does with the aftermath. A dramatic incident can be harrowing; making it matter to the character requires consequences that persist beyond the scene itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat distinction is especially useful when judging an episode with several active plots. The hospital emergency supplies external tension, and Bailey’s assignment supplies another strand of action. Lucy’s story needs enough space between those developments for the audience to register her emotional reality. The episode’s premise promises a consequential hour for her; whether it delivers a sustained character study depends on the balance and follow-through, not the incident alone.
