Need a nudge for Connections puzzle #811? Start with the four staged hints below, then open the answer section when you’re ready for the groups. The guide dates #811 to Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025; an Aug. 30, 2024 search result identifies a different puzzle, #446, so the year matters.

How Connections works

Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four, with each group sharing a link. The categories are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally the most straightforward, followed by green, blue, and purple. Some words can seem to fit more than one group, so look for the set of four that makes the strongest, cleanest connection.

The #811 word bank is: BLOW, GLASS, FUNK, STINK, METAL, ROCK, BITE, EAT, CAGE, EMO, ENO, RULE, SLAY, SUCK, POP, and REICH.

  3. Blue: A 5-star review.
  4. Purple: Stars of new age music.

Answers for Connections #811

Spoilers below. The four category labels and their words are:

  • Yellow — MUSIC GENRES: EMO, FUNK, METAL, POP.
  • Green — NOT BE GOOD: BITE, BLOW, STINK, SUCK.
  • Blue — DO EXCEPTIONALLY WELL: EAT, ROCK, RULE, SLAY.
  • Purple — CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS: CAGE, ENO, GLASS, REICH.

Why some words are easy to misplace

Several terms point toward more than one possible association. ROCK looks like a music genre, but in this puzzle it belongs with verbs meaning to do exceptionally well. FUNK and STINK can both bring odors to mind, yet they fall into separate groups: FUNK is a genre, while STINK means not to be good. The purple set is made up of surnames: John Cage, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich are the contemporary composers indicated by the category.
