How the connections fit

Yellow: partiality

ANGLE, BIAS, SLANT, and SPIN can each describe a point of view that favors one side.

Green: signaling down a taxi

FLAG, HAIL, WAVE, and WHISTLE are ways to attract a taxi driver’s attention.

Blue: Texas Hold ’em cards

HOLE cards are dealt to each player; the FLOP, TURN, and RIVER are the community-card stages.

Purple: Shakespearean words

ANON, ART, THOU, and WILT are archaic forms associated with Shakespearean English.

How Connections works

Connections gives players 16 words to divide into four groups of four that share a theme. The groups are color-coded from yellow, the easiest, to purple, the trickiest. A new puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s local time zone. NYT lists the game in its Games app, at NYTimes.com/games/connections, on NYTimes.com/theathletic, and in the News app.
