How Connections works
Connections presents sixteen words and asks players to divide them into four groups of four words that share a theme. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow, green, blue, then purple. A guess with three words from one group produces an “one away” indication without revealing the group, and four incorrect guesses end the puzzle. These general mechanics are described in the 2024 paper “Missed Connections: Lateral Thinking Puzzles for Large Language Models”.
For this grid, try phrase completions and direct associations first, then check whether a word could plausibly fit more than one category. That overlap is where an attractive early grouping can become a red herring.
