Toby Keith’s final recorded vocal was on “Ships That Don’t Come In,” a Joe Diffie song recorded with Luke Combs for the tribute album HIXTAPE: Vol. 3: DIFFTAPE. Big Loud Records identifies it as Keith’s final recorded vocal and says the released studio footage shows his last recording session. The session took place in Nashville in 2023; the label has not specified the exact date.

What Toby Keith recorded

“Ships That Don’t Come In” is a rendition of a song by Joe Diffie, not a newly written Toby Keith song. Big Loud describes the original as a 1992 tune. The recording brings together vocals from Diffie, Keith and Luke Combs.

Big Loud announced the track as part of HIXTAPE: Vol. 3: DIFFTAPE, a 17-song tribute project made in conjunction with the Joe Diffie estate. “Ships That Don’t Come In” is track 3. The label says the album combines reimaginings of Diffie classics with previously unheard recordings captured in 2006; that year refers to those archival recordings, not Keith and Combs’s session.

When Keith and Luke Combs recorded it

In its August 29, 2024 announcement about the studio video, Big Loud said Keith and Combs recorded vocals in Nashville the previous year, placing the session in 2023. It did not give a specific day. The announcement described the footage as showing Keith’s last recording session before his death in February 2024. Big Loud’s studio-video announcement

Combs said of the collaboration: “To be on a song with Toby was a no-brainer when it got presented to me.”

Where the song fits in the tribute album

Big Loud announced HIXTAPE: Vol. 3: DIFFTAPE on March 28, 2024, and said the full project would be released March 29. The label’s album announcement lists the Keith, Combs and Diffie recording as the third track.

What “final song” means here

The supported claim is specific: “Ships That Don’t Come In” contains Keith’s final recorded vocal, and the session shown in the footage was his last recording session, according to Big Loud. That does not establish that it was his final composition, his last album release, or his final live performance. Those are different milestones, and the label’s announcements do not identify them.
