TikTok creator Scott O’Halloran said he had a relationship lasting about three to four years with a former AFL player. He has chosen not to identify the person, saying he does not want to out anyone. In interviews reported on 8 and 9 May 2024, O’Halloran described the strain of keeping the relationship private and said homophobia and pressure contributed to its end.
What O’Halloran disclosed
PerthNow reported on 8 May 2024 that O’Halloran made the disclosure on his podcast, Luke and Sassy Scott. He described the other person as a footballer who no longer played AFL at the time of the report. O’Halloran said they had been in a relationship for about three to four years.
He spoke of the relationship as emotionally significant, while expressing uncertainty about whether his feelings were returned. As PerthNow quoted him: “I think I loved him. I don’t know if he loved me. We enjoyed one another’s company and confided so much in one another when we were both in the closet.” PerthNow’s report attributes the comments to O’Halloran’s podcast.
Why the player remains unnamed
O’Halloran said he would not reveal the former player’s identity. In a radio interview, as reported by 7NEWS on 9 May 2024, he explained: “No one’s job is to ever ‘out’ a person – so that’s not my goal in this.” The player’s identity has not been disclosed in the cited coverage, and there is no basis here to infer or speculate about who it was.

Keeping the person unnamed is central to the account: O’Halloran shared his own experience while declining to expose someone who had not chosen to speak publicly about it. 7NEWS reported his explanation and the surrounding interview context.
What O’Halloran said about the relationship ending
O’Halloran attributed the end of the relationship to the pressure of concealment and what he described as homophobia. PerthNow quoted him saying: “The toxicity and homophobia is what ended our relationship. It was too much pressure on him. It was too much pressure on me.” Those are his reflections on a personal relationship, not an independently established finding about the AFL as a whole or every player’s experience.

Why he spoke about it in 2024
The May 2024 coverage connected O’Halloran’s decision to speak with recent homophobic-slur incidents in the AFL and his criticism of the league’s response. 7NEWS discussed incidents involving Jeremy Finlayson and Wil Powell; Fox Sports Australia, republishing News.com.au coverage, also reported on the disclosure and its context. That explains the timing as presented in those reports, but it does not establish a league-wide rate of homophobia or prove that the incidents represent every player’s experience.
Fox Sports Australia’s account likewise reported the relationship’s approximate duration and the decision not to identify the former player.
