Visual-effects artist Tim McGovern died on March 30, 2024, at age 68, according to a contemporaneous report attributing the announcement to his wife, Reena NeGandhi. McGovern shared the Academy’s 1991 Special Achievement Award for visual effects for Total Recall with Eric Brevig, Rob Bottin and Alex Funke.
What McGovern did on Total Recall
Variety reported that McGovern was the CGI director on Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 film and associated his work with its X-ray security-check sequence, in which characters’ skeletons are revealed. That account describes a reported production role; the Academy’s award record establishes the four recipients, not how individual duties were divided.

At the 1991 Academy Awards, Total Recall received the Special Achievement Award for visual effects. The Academy lists Brevig, Bottin, McGovern and Funke as recipients, so McGovern was a co-recipient rather than the sole winner. The Academy’s 63rd Awards record documents the category and recipients.
From Tron to later studio films
The Visual Effects Society’s memorial says McGovern’s screen credits began with Tron (1982), while he was employed at Robert Abel and Associates. It also identifies him as a founding member of Sony Pictures Imageworks.
