Tiffany Wedekind has spoken publicly about living with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS), a rare genetic condition associated with features of accelerated aging in childhood and serious cardiovascular risks. In a Mount Sinai interview, the Columbus artist said she was diagnosed at 31 and reflected on how treatment has changed the outlook for children with the condition. Her experience is one person’s account, not a forecast for everyone with HGPS.
What Tiffany Wedekind has said about her diagnosis
In Mount Sinai Health System’s Road to Resilience interview, Wedekind described herself as an artist based in Columbus, Ohio. She said she was diagnosed with progeria at 31. A 2022 report by The Lantern placed her diagnosis in her late twenties, so the public accounts do not establish a single exact age across all reporting.
Asked about the condition, Wedekind said, “Progeria is a rapid-aging disease.” She also described cardiovascular complications and said children can have strokes at a very early age. Her wording conveys the seriousness of the condition, but HGPS does not simply reproduce every aspect of ordinary aging.
On life expectancy and diagnosis, she added, “Kids are living a lot longer now because of treatments.” That is her perspective from the interview, rather than a clinical estimate or a recommendation about treatment.

What progeria is—and what “rapidly aging” means
Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome is a rare genetic condition. MedlinePlus Genetics explains that its characteristic appearance begins in childhood and that people with HGPS face an increased risk of heart attack or stroke at a young age. The description “rapid aging” is a useful shorthand for some visible and health effects; it should not be taken to mean that every part of the body ages exactly as it does in typical aging.
The National Institutes of Health describes HGPS as involving a mutation in the LMNA gene. The mutation leads to production of an abnormal protein called progerin, which disrupts normal cell function. Cardiovascular disease is a major concern, but these general medical facts do not establish Wedekind’s individual diagnosis details or care.

How to understand lifespan figures
Numbers about lifespan describe groups, not a timetable for an individual. The National Human Genome Research Institute’s progeria information page, accessed in 2026, reports an average death age of 13, usually from heart attack or stroke. That population-level figure cannot predict how long any one person will live, and it should be read in the context of treatment advances rather than as an unchanging prognosis.

The same NHGRI page estimates that progeria affects about one in four million newborns worldwide. Separately, an NIH advisory from 2020 reported about 400 diagnosed children worldwide at that time. These are different measures—an estimated birth frequency and a dated count of diagnosed children—not competing estimates of the number of people currently living with the condition.

Treatment context: what the 2020 approval means
On November 23, 2020, NIH reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had approved lonafarnib as the first treatment for progeria. This marked an important change in the treatment landscape, but the approval is not evidence that the condition is cured or that everyone has the same response. It also does not establish which treatment, if any, Wedekind currently receives.

Wedekind’s adulthood and the limits of public accounts
Mount Sinai’s recorded interview described Wedekind as 45 at the time it was made. A 2026 Matter News profile reported that she was approaching 49 and recounted her account of a recent heart attack and subsequent procedures. Those details are attributed to the profile; they are not an independently verified medical record here.
Her survival into adulthood is unusual in published accounts of HGPS. Descriptions such as “oldest known” depend on when and how a source reports them, so they are snapshots rather than a permanent, independently certified record. Wedekind’s public story is best understood as her own experience alongside—not as a replacement for—the broader medical picture.
