This is an editorial selection, not a provable ranking; the distinctions between admission, allegation, legal outcome and accident matter.
1. The 2009 crash and infidelity revelations
In November 2009, Woods crashed his vehicle near his Florida home. The crash drew intense attention as reports of extramarital affairs surfaced. The traffic matter and the personal revelations were separate: The Guardian reported that Florida Highway Patrol issued Woods a careless-driving citation, fined him $164, and closed its investigation without criminal charges. The Guardian’s contemporaneous timeline also reported that Woods publicly acknowledged infidelity in December.

In a statement reproduced by Sporting News, Woods said: “I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children.” He announced an indefinite break from golf. The admission, rather than the crash citation, made this episode a major personal scandal. Sporting News’ retrospective reproduces the statement and describes the timeline.
2. The commercial fallout from the 2009 admission
The revelations had consequences beyond Woods’s marriage and golf career. A later AP account lists AT&T, General Motors, Gatorade and Accenture among the companies that ended or changed their relationships with him. AP’s timeline of Woods’s crashes and injuries provides that retrospective context.

Claims that the scandal caused a specific amount of shareholder losses should not be treated as settled fact on the basis of a repeated estimate alone. The cited coverage does not provide an original study and methodology establishing a definitive figure.
3. The 2017 arrest and reckless-driving plea
In May 2017, Woods was arrested in Florida on suspicion of driving under the influence. An arrest is not a conviction: AP reports that the case ended with Woods pleading guilty to reckless driving, entering a diversion program, and receiving a year of probation, a $250 fine and court costs. The outcome was a reckless-driving plea, not a DUI conviction. AP’s account summarizes the disposition.
Woods said alcohol was not involved and attributed the incident to an unexpected reaction to prescribed medication. That explanation is his account; the legal outcome reported by AP was the reckless-driving plea.
4. The 2021 rollover and recovery
In February 2021, Woods was seriously injured in a single-vehicle rollover near Los Angeles. AP reported that his right leg and ankle suffered severe trauma; a doctor’s statement described open fractures and significant ankle injuries. Woods underwent treatment and a lengthy recovery. AP’s timeline recounts the crash and injuries.
This episode belongs on a list of controversies only in the broad sense of a heavily covered event with major career consequences. The cited reporting establishes a serious crash and recovery, not misconduct by Woods.

AP reported that Woods was arrested after a rollover crash on Jupiter Island, Florida. According to the deputy’s report described by AP, the deputy recorded signs of impairment; Woods said he had looked at his phone and changed the radio. Those are reported allegations and statements from the arrest-stage account, not a finding of guilt. AP’s 2026 report describes the incident and the account in the deputy’s report.
The cited report does not establish the final court outcome. The arrest should therefore be described as an unresolved legal matter unless a current court record or reliable update confirms a disposition.
