The asterisk in Thunderbolts* points to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s reveal that the team will be presented to the public as the New Avengers. The film has two end-credits scenes: one follows the team’s new identity and an Avengers-name dispute; the other shows an extra-dimensional spacecraft entering Earth’s orbit, connecting the film to the Fantastic Four side of the MCU.
What does the asterisk in Thunderbolts* mean?
It signals that “Thunderbolts” is not the group’s final public name. At the end of the film, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine presents the team as the New Avengers, turning the asterisk into a hint at the rebranding reveal rather than a separate word or acronym. The film does not establish another official expansion for the symbol. Disney’s film page retains the asterisk in the title.

How many end-credits scenes does the film have?
Thunderbolts* has two end-credits scenes. They do different jobs: the first continues the New Avengers’ immediate story, while the second widens the lens to a Fantastic Four connection. The Los Angeles Times’ explanation and TIME’s scene breakdown cover both.
What happens in the first end-credits scene?
The first scene takes place after the team’s rebranding and shows the New Avengers in their new public position. Their identity is immediately complicated by a dispute over the Avengers name. The scene establishes that conflict as a story beat; it does not show a final legal outcome or settle who will ultimately use the name.

- After being ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes assembles and embarks on a dangerous mission. Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will the group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and prevail?
What happens in the second end-credits scene?
The second scene ends with an extra-dimensional spacecraft entering Earth’s orbit. That image points toward the Fantastic Four corner of the MCU, but the film does not explain the ship’s full mission or resolve what happens next. The connection is a franchise tease, not a complete account of the next story. TIME’s discussion of the Fantastic Four setup provides further context.
Does Thunderbolts* set up the Fantastic Four?
Yes, in the limited sense that the spacecraft is a clear Fantastic Four-related connection. What the scene confirms is the ship’s arrival in Earth’s orbit; its purpose and the consequences of that arrival remain unexplained in the film. Treat predictions about the next plot as inference, not as events the scene has already confirmed.
