What counts as a three-word band name?
For this list, count each space-separated written token as one word. Under that convention, “3,” “Doors,” and “Down” make three tokens in 3 Doors Down. The same approach counts “Three,” “Days,” and “Grace” in Three Days Grace, and “Three,” “Dog,” and “Night” in Three Dog Night.
This is a practical counting rule, not a claim about grammar or a band’s preferred interpretation. Ampersands, hyphens, apostrophes, numerals, and stylized or closed compounds can complicate a count. When a band’s official styling is unclear, treat the result as an example under the stated convention rather than a definitive catalog entry.
Examples of bands with three-word names
3 Doors Down
3 Doors Down is the clearest sourced example here. Alternative Press recounts that the band saw a building sign with most of its letters missing, leaving “Doors Down”; the group then had three members. Three Days Grace
Three Days Grace fits the three-token rule as written. It appears in a band-name etymology reference, but the available sourcing does not establish its official styling as firmly as the account for 3 Doors Down. Band name etymology reference.
Three Dog Night
Three Dog Night also has three space-separated tokens and appears in the same etymology reference. As with Three Days Grace, consider it a candidate example rather than a fully verified entry in an exhaustive list. Band name etymology reference.

Names that do not fit the three-word count
A band’s history can include several names, but that does not change how many words its best-known name contains. The following examples are useful contrasts, not three-word band names:
- The 1975: This name has two space-separated tokens: “The” and “1975.” Alternative Press reports that Matthew Healy took it from a date he saw in an old art journal, “June 1st, the 1975.” Alternative Press on the origin of The 1975’s name.
- Linkin Park: The band’s official biography says it previously used the names Xero and Hybrid Theory before settling on Linkin Park. The final name has two tokens. Linkin Park’s official biography.
- Jethro Tull: The official FAQ says the band frequently changed names early on and that its agent proposed Jethro Tull in February 1968. The name has two tokens. Jethro Tull’s official FAQ.
- Tom & Jerry: Simon & Garfunkel’s official biography identifies this as an earlier name for the duo. It is not a clear three-word name under a space-separated-token rule because “&” is punctuation rather than a word. Simon & Garfunkel’s official biography.
Is this an exhaustive list?
No. These examples illustrate a counting convention; they do not establish every band whose name contains three written tokens. Nor do they show that three-word names are more popular, commercially successful, or artistically effective than names with other structures. A definitive directory would require checking each band’s official name styling against reliable sources.
