Written and directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, it follows Marcelo, a technology expert on the run who hopes to reunite with his son. Rather than play as a straightforward spy procedural, the film uses the period to explore political fear, memory and cinema.
What is The Secret Agent about?
Marcelo arrives in Recife during Carnival week in 1977, pursued by danger and hoping to see his son again. The festival’s synopsis describes him as a technology expert in his early 40s; the city is not a safe refuge. The film’s title may suggest an espionage adventure, but its premise is broader than a conventional secret-agent assignment. Cannes describes the film as a feature set against the political atmosphere of Brazil in the late 1970s. Festival de Cannes film listing
How does the film approach Brazil’s history?
Director Kleber Mendonça Filho has said he wanted to capture the era’s “logic” and atmosphere rather than follow a checklist of familiar dictatorship-film conventions. In the official Cannes press-kit interview, he put it this way: “The challenge was to make a film about the logic of that time without ticking all the boxes of the dictatorship movie.” His perspective draws on childhood memories of 1977 as well as films, recorded testimony and material archives.
That emphasis gives the story a distinctive frame: the past is not only something recreated on screen, but something encountered later through records and memories. The film’s movement toward 2025 includes tape recordings and younger people engaging with those traces. Mendonça Filho has also described his interest as “the logic of things — the logic of Brazil, or the logic of being in love with films.” Cannes press-kit interview
