Before it aired, his representative cited a scheduling conflict. Months later, Hader described declining Andy Samberg’s proposed anxiety-themed digital short because he felt anxious about participating. That later account adds context, but it does not establish anxiety as the sole reason he missed the entire special.
What Hader’s representative said before the special
In advance of the broadcast, Hader’s representative gave a scheduling conflict as the reason he would not attend, according to The Daily Beast’s August 5, 2025 report. That was the public explanation at the time; it does not disclose the details of the conflict.

What Hader later said about Andy Samberg’s short
In an August 2025 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Hader recounted that Andy Samberg called with an idea for a digital short about the anxiety performers experience on Saturday Night Live. Hader said he was unsure about taking part because he felt anxious. Bowen Yang appeared in the short instead, as reported by the Los Angeles Times and The Daily Beast.
The key distinction is scope: Hader’s later remarks concern his decision about Samberg’s proposed short. They add a personal explanation beyond the representative’s earlier scheduling-conflict statement, but do not show that Hader explicitly named anxiety as the reason for missing every part of the anniversary special.

Why the anniversary special was a major event
NBCUniversal announced a three-hour primetime special, SNL50: The Anniversary Special, airing on NBC and streaming on Peacock on February 16, 2025. The NBCUniversal announcement set out the broadcast plan; an Associated Press preview published February 11, 2025 described it as a live anniversary broadcast and listed guests and performers then announced. A preview lineup records plans, not proof that every named person ultimately appeared.
The anniversary season also included SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, a four-part docuseries with more than 60 contributors, according to NBCUniversal. That programming provides context for the celebration, but does not explain Hader’s absence.

Hader’s SNL history—and the limits of what it explains
Hader was a cast member for eight seasons, from 2005 to 2013, the Los Angeles Times reported. In the same interview, he recalled an anxiety episode during his first season in which he temporarily lost his vision backstage before a sketch. Castmate Jason Sudeikis helped him through it.
That story is relevant background because Hader has publicly discussed anxiety connected with his time on the show. It is not evidence that the same experience—or any single factor—determined his decision about the 2025 special. The most accurate account keeps his representative’s pre-event explanation separate from Hader’s later comments about the short.
