Albert Camus’s The Stranger took shape over years of experimentation, then reached readers through a chain of advocacy and editorial decisions. Pascal Pia helped put the manuscript before influential readers; Gallimard brought it out in occupied Paris on May 19, 1942, despite wartime paper constraints and Camus’s illness. Its path was neither a straight line from first draft to publication nor a foregone conclusion.

How did The Stranger take shape?

L’Étranger grew from earlier writing projects and Camus’s accumulated experience rather than arriving as a finished philosophical scheme. The Société des Études Camusiennes traces material in the novel to earlier narrative experiments, including “Louis Raingeard” and “Quartier Pauvre,” an earlier designation associated with La Mort heureuse. The society dates the distinct, resolved project to January 1940, after a long period of trial and approximation. Its account emphasizes the joining of personal mythology, mother-son relations, ordinary situations, and Camus’s familiarity with courts and prisons through journalism—not simply the illustration of “the absurd.” Société des Études Camusiennes.

A first draft was not the final text

Camus wrote to Francine on May 1, 1940, that he had finished the novel, while also indicating that it was not finished in a broader sense, according to the bibliographical account from the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB). He sent manuscripts to Jean Grenier and Pascal Pia in March 1941, and chapters continued to be revised. The distinction matters: a declaration of completion or an early draft does not mark the exact final text that went to print. ILAB catalogue.

Who helped Camus get the manuscript read?

Pascal Pia was the central advocate. The Société des Études Camusiennes describes him as the most active and devoted of the intermediaries who helped bring the novel into print. He circulated the manuscript among people whose opinions could carry weight. Société des Études Camusiennes.

Malraux, Paulhan, and Grenier

Alice Kaplan’s account in Publishers Weekly says Pia sent the manuscript to André Malraux, who read it and offered suggestions. The ILAB catalogue also traces the manuscript’s circulation through Jean Paulhan and Malraux’s circle. Camus’s mentor Jean Grenier read a version but had reservations; that was one reader’s response, not a consensus among publishers or critics. Kaplan, Publishers Weekly; ILAB catalogue.

Paulhan also played a practical editorial role at Gallimard. Kaplan says he oversaw the final proof corrections when Camus could not review them himself. A surviving manuscript reportedly spells the protagonist’s name “Mersault”; Kaplan raises the possibility that the “u” in “Meursault” was introduced at the proof stage, but does not establish who made the change. It remains an unresolved detail, not evidence of Paulhan’s hand.

Why was publication difficult in occupied Paris?

Gallimard published L’Étranger in Paris under German occupation in 1942. Publication faced constrained paper supplies as well as an approval regime imposed by occupation authorities. The 2022 article in Orbis Tertius recounts Gerhard Heller’s later account of reading and approving the manuscript; Kaplan likewise describes paper allocation and German approval as obstacles. Heller’s part in the story is known here through those historical accounts, rather than a cited original censorship file. Orbis Tertius (2022); Kaplan, Publishers Weekly.

Camus could not proofread in the usual way

Camus’s tuberculosis returned during the winter of 1942. Kaplan’s account says he was too ill and too far from Paris to proofread the pages conventionally, and sent Gallimard limited corrections. Paulhan handled the final proof stage. The book’s appearance depended in part on others completing that work while Camus was absent.

When was The Stranger published?

The ILAB bibliographical catalogue says printing by Chantenay was completed on April 21, 1942, and that the book was offered in Paris bookshops on May 19. The Orbis Tertius article independently identifies May 19, 1942, as the date it appeared in Paris shop windows. These are different milestones: completion of printing preceded the public release by several weeks. ILAB catalogue; Orbis Tertius (2022).

How many copies were printed?

Published accounts give different figures, and the available sources do not reconcile them. The counts may refer to different categories or stages, so they should not be collapsed into one definitive first-print-run total.

What did readers and critics make of it at first?

The Société des Études Camusiennes records two early pieces connected with Gallimard’s efforts to introduce Camus: Marcel Arland in Comoedia on July 11, 1942, and Fieschi in the NRF in September 1942. Five more articles followed through 1943. This documents an early critical presence, but does not by itself establish sales, the breadth of public response, or how the novel later became canonical. Société des Études Camusiennes.

Why the publication story is more than a date

The story of The Stranger is one of gradual formation followed by contingent passage through readers, editors, and wartime production. A project with roots in Camus’s earlier work became a manuscript revised after an early claim of completion. Pia’s advocacy brought it to key readers; Paulhan helped carry it through the final proofs when illness kept Camus from doing so himself. Gallimard’s May 1942 publication in occupied Paris depended on navigating paper scarcity and approval. Those steps explain how the book reached its first readers without turning its publication into either a simple triumph or a near-certain failure.
