Niyati Bhat’s review of Manan Kapoor’s A Map of Longings sees it as an affectionate, research-rich portrait of poet Agha Shahid Ali—but one that, in her view, does not examine his life and poetry critically enough. Bhat finds the biography most compelling when it turns to Shahid’s relationships and the actual work of making poems.
What Manan Kapoor’s biography covers
A Map of Longings: The Life and Works of Agha Shahid Ali traces the poet’s life from Kashmir to New Delhi and the United States. Its publisher describes a portrait built around Shahid’s concerns, relationships and writing, drawing on unpublished material and interviews with people who knew him. Penguin Random House India’s book listing provides the publisher’s description.
In her 2021 review for Scroll.in, Niyati Bhat describes chapters on Shahid’s family history and adolescence, his time at Hindu College in Delhi, and his work as a poet and professor in India and the United States. She says Kapoor connects episodes in Shahid’s life with particular poems and collections, using archival and personal material, conversations, and unpublished essays.
Why Bhat calls it a love letter, not a critical view
The review’s headline calls the biography “a love letter to the poet but not a critical view of a life.” That is Bhat’s assessment, not a neutral description established independently of the review. Her central concern is that the book sometimes revisits familiar material and leans heavily on earlier writing about Shahid.

Bhat also argues that Kapoor does not always scrutinize the poems or the quotations he uses as closely as she would like. She points to formulations that, in her view, simplify rather than illuminate. For example, the review quotes Kapoor writing, “Shahid not only wanted to become a poet, he wanted to become a good poet,” and asks what “good poet” means in that context. Bhat similarly reports Kapoor’s formulation, “Shahid wrote out of experience, not about it.” These quotations are presented as they appear in the review; they should not be treated as independently verified against the book.
Where the biography becomes most revealing
Bhat’s response grows more positive from chapter eight onward. She values the attention to Shahid’s personal and creative relationships, correspondence, teaching, translation, and the development of individual poems. In her reading, these accounts bring the poet’s working life into sharper focus than passages that repeat established biographical material.

Especially notable is the review’s discussion of revision: Shahid’s engagement with rejection, his willingness to rework poems, and his conversations about drafts with poet James Merrill. For readers interested in how poems are shaped—not only in the experiences that inform them—this process-oriented material is a key strength of Kapoor’s book, as Bhat describes it.
How to place it among writing on Shahid
Bhat reads Kapoor’s biography alongside other writing about Shahid, including Amitav Ghosh’s “The Ghat of the Only World,” scholarship by Huzaifa Pandit and Nishat Zaidi, recollections by Kamila Shamsie, and Mad Heart Be Brave: Essays on the Poetry of Agha Shahid Ali, edited by Kazim Ali. Her broader point is that no single account can capture the poet’s life or literary inheritance in full.

The review does not offer a systematic ranking of these works. Instead, it suggests useful questions for readers comparing them: how closely does a book analyze the poems, what kinds of interviews or documents does it draw on, how does it portray Shahid’s relationships and teaching, and how much attention does it give to composition and revision? Kapoor’s book, in Bhat’s account, is strongest on personal connections and creative process, and less persuasive when it repeats familiar material or stops short of critical analysis.
